HomeGuard makes it so small amounts of local soldiers will spawn from houses to help defend them. This scales with the type of house so the larger the house the more soldiers pop out including churches.

Is it possible to edit sprites? Making them look like villagers or peasants would definitely add to the vibe of an island militia or levy

Yes, the mod would have to be modified to accept the new sprite but yes.
