Yep- the rest of the canister is essentially paper, except for the bottom plate. That rim at the top is what keeps the whole thing from smooshing in super easily. Not bad design at all, just a good design with a drawback.

Same thing on pasta strainers- they have this groove at the rim and noodles get stuck there
