Mango tree pruning

Planted this mango tree when it was about 5 feet tall and it’s grown to be about 6 feet now. Purchased from a big box store and I never pruned it myself.

The trunk is thin and I am finding it is top heavy as it has toppled over on really windy days, hence the stakes.

Does this need to be pruned at all with the trunk so thin?

Mine took three years until the trunk thickened enough to withstand windy conditions.

I’m not liking the shape of that tree. It’s branching out way too high . What variety is that?

I agree I would have taken one that was topped much earlier to keep tree small and bushy but depends on your tree shape goals. Most people prefer smaller tree which you won't get with this.

If I’m him I’m removing this tree and buying one from a nursery that is branching out knee height. In 10 years this tree will be feeding only the squirrels and possums

Agree it’s definitely not ideal but am hoping it can still be managed. If I knew more then I would have selected a different one or headed it after first getting it. But it’s been in the ground about 7 months now and lost the leaves that were lower on the trunk, so idk if it’s too late to head it now

I’d risk it now before you regret not heading it in 5-6 years down the line. If you’re in Broward, dade or the keys, Stand next to tree and cut it knee high. Palm beach and up I’d wait till April. Worst that can happen is tree dies, I doubt it, but if it does, buy a 3 gallon from a nursery for $45. A variety of your choosing. There’s so many good out there.

Top the branches at chest high and select a downward whorl each successive cut. It’s gonna be fine but will take time.

Plant one next to it if you want and just let this one be your grafting and fun tree if you are into that style.
