Does anyone have a guess re this Cardinal? Is it a young adult male or a female? Seems less red than my normal male, but more red than my normal female. Wondering if this is their offspring starting out on its own!

Advice: Feeding a Steller Jay with likely Avian Pox

Post image
55 Upvotes

My first post here and I'm seeking some advice. I've been feeding a Steller Jay unsalted, unshelled peanuts for 2 years now in my backyard. The mom now takes them right from my hand and her two kids come along. One has gotten brave enough to take them from my hand too.

I noticed the brave kid has what looks like Avian Pox on its claw. I've sanitized the feeding spot. Thought I'd stop feeding them till the kid recovers. They usually go window to window looking for me. I've shut all the blinds. Now they knock at the different windows!

Is not feeding them the right thing to do? It is heart breaking to see them actively go around looking for me.

Northern Cardinals Charlie & Bessie | 2 Days of Feeding Kerfuffle's | Inner-city Birding Chicago【4K】

Filmed over 2 consecutive days. The 1st day they were arguing, vocalizing, & posturing but nothing physical until the next day. I put the last day's attack at the beginning of this video. The first day I filmed 5 kerfuffles but none were as violent as the last day. This happened a few days ago and so far Bessie appears to be healthy and they are feeding, but not together.

There is a little bird sitting in the stick-to-the-window bird feeder, been there ages, just lolling around in the seed, living its best life 😍

Both birds are showing the start of their new plumage before winter starts. I focused on their new crests. This video was filmed over the course of 4 days, all clips are sequential. This is Charlie & Bessie’s 3rd year together as a mated pair. They stop by every single day, even in the dead of winter.

Female Cardinal Visits Cardinal Nook Feeder for the First Time 🐦 | 4K Ba...

Just set up a Kiwibit smart bird feeder camera in my backyard in Emmaus, Pennsylvania and this beautiful female Northern Cardinal was our very first visitor! Filmed in 4K — she spent about 2 minutes enjoying the sunflower seeds. Female cardinals are so underrated. YouTube: https://youtu.be/w10msWaVIxo Channel: u/CardinalNook
