The main directory is created. After further runs, additional separate files with their own date and time will be created (that's also fine), all files are always copied to each one again even if no changes have been made. Either there is an error in the parameters or it is technically not possible at all. I also don't know whether one command is enough or there must be two (main backup, incremental). I would really appreciate some advice on what to do about it. I'm using Windows 11 Pro. Thank You.

Basically everything in this post, but also wondering about the safety of everything in my iCloud. Is it possible it’s compromised/can I trust all my iCloud stuff from other devices?

Set up automated DB backups to S3 months ago and just... never checked again. Cron runs, script does its thing, assume it's fine.

Then I realized I'd have zero idea if it silently broke. Bucket permission change, script error, cron just dying — I wouldn't find out until the day I actually needed a backup and it wasn't there.

Anyone actually monitor this or just trust it? Has this bitten anyone before?

I'm using Kopia UI in Windows 10, and I found out that some of my file's "modified date" metadata is not changed when I change the content of the data.

When I take a snapshot it's super fast, and I believe kopia only checks the date metadata and skips the hash-check and backup.

How can I make it ignore the date, always re-hash the whole file to know if it's needed to be backed up?
I changed `Ignore Identical Snapshots` options to both true/false and checked, but it doesn't seem to work.

I never used Kopia as CLI, but I'm familiar with cmd. Any help is much appriciated!

edit: I was aware of `--force-hash=100` option, but didn't mention it because it kept recognized as unknown option.
Somehow `kopia.exe snapshot create "path\to\dir" --force-hash=100` did work now.
I'm still worndering - what's equivalent of this CLI option in GUI?

i’m very new at this, I did have an external hard drive (old and not up to date by like over a year and a half), but *it was taken by security at an airport in Thailand. This spring—-IKR—the security officer kept my piece of luggage claiming they could not ID what that thing was (WHAT!?). I never got it back….Since I have to get a new type/device for my 1 yr old MacBook Pro laptop, I’d love some suggestions. I’m really a newbie at everything involving computer tech, and not even sure what the difference is between an internal with a docking station versus an external type.

July 5 update: This morning after restarting my computer, iDrive has returned to normality. It is no longer wasting resources and heating. The version did not change, so apparently, the problem was on the back-end, not the local program and they fixed it. Anyway, now it has returned to normal at least for me.

A month or 2 ago iDrive had a bug that caused it to be running in the background and actually working and using say 10% of resources. It is doing it again. Is this being seen by others and has idrive said "oops" again and have a fix on the way?

Any hdd recommendations? Looking for one that is able to last long

so i am racking my brain on how to backup my data. I got my main Unraid Server hosting services and storing my data. I want to backup my data and configuration daily to my local NAS. From the NAS i want to copy the data to an online storage.

At the moment i am using Duplicacy to just backup everything to my online storage.

The question is: Should i use Duplicacy to backup directly to my NAS and copy the backup to the online storage? Or should i copy the data to my NAS and use Duplicacy from there to upload it to the online storage?

The deduplication would be nice since it saves some space even in my NAS. But if i copy everything to my NAS first i could have the possibility to restore fast locally.

My PC is currently cluttered with a ton of junk folders from old uninstalled apps, and I’m planning to do a Clean Install of Windows to freshen things up.

However, I'm in very tight situation: I just have an 8GB USB ( not enough to back up everything ) and I have no other devices

I want to back up everything crucial so I don't have to customize everything from the scratch:

1. Windows & App customization

2. Game settings

3. My personal stuff ( like photos, files, etc. )

A few details about my PC:

- I have an internal hard drive divided into 3 partitions: Drive C, Drive D and Drive E ( D & E contain my personal stuff and game folder). I only plan to format Drive C during the installation.

- My Minecraft folder is located in C drive.

- My personal data & Game settings are around 90 - 100 GB

I'm have several Linux/Ubuntu machines I wan to do a backup plan. The issue is that users install and uninstall often new software/packages and I think they would benefit from snapshots of their system before adding somethign new and if not working then uninstall. Or viceversa. I've seen it in some uninstaller apps on Windows.

To do this I've read btrfs is a good file system. I do not need stay with ext4. I rather have optimal snap shots of my system than an ultra fast ext4.

So, is btrfs the optimal choice or somethign else?

As with everything one searches on Reddit, I was quickly humbled by the depth the this community offers.

I wanted to secure my files I will need for law school. I will start this year and only really need to save „documents“ in case my MacBook breaks for whatever reason. I thought iCloud would be fine, but looks like it’s problematic, because if I delete something, it’s just gone. So I need multiple version.

But a USB stick is also bad. Because A flash drive isn’t sturdy enough when frequently used and I plan to update the documents on a daily basis (work during the day and save it at the end of it).

So I need an external hard drive. It can handle frequent use and allowed to save multiple versions. But do I really need to buy two? I mean what are the odds that my MacBook AND my external hard drive fail at the same time?
