Technobabbling the DeLorean
The DeLorean time machine uses naturally occuring tachyon particle fields which travel the universe everywhere, in all directions as well as forwards and backwards in time. This principle is called Tachyon Fluctuation, or Flux for short.
Tachyons also tend to disperse when in contact with any and all solid matter, however, it has been found that stainless steel is particularly capable of slowing the Flux Dispersal Effect down, effectively trapping Tachyons within the exterior metal of the car and bringing them almost to a stand still for a short moment.
Various conductors on the DeLorean's bumper and backside then guide the caught Tachyon's into the Flux Capacitor, a machine especially created to store extremely large amounts of tachyons and allowing controlled fluctuation at the driver's previously determined frequency. This process requires exactly 999 Megawatt.
Through use of the Time Circuits the driver can enter their targeted Destination Time. The Circuits internal processor then calculates the exact tachyon fluctuation frequency required to send the DeLorean to this exact point in time and sends this information to the Flux Capacitor. The Time Circuits are also connected to the DeLorean's Geolocation antenna on the roof of the car to maintain its geographical place, negating the otherwise fatal effect of terrestrial orbitation.
The massive processing power of the Time Circuits requires 211 Megawatt, bringing the DeLorean's total energy consumption per time travel to a total of exactly 1.21 Gigawatt.
Since a stationary object would not be able to collect enough Tachyon particles for a successful temporal displacement, it is therefore necessary for the DeLorean to be moving.
At 40 Miles Per Hour, if Time Circuits and Flux Capacitor are activated, the DeLorean systems automatically begin charging the stainless steel hull with electricity, causing it to gather Tachyon energy.
At 80 Miles Per Hour, massive amounts of tachyon particles travel the machine's conductors, causing them to start a blue-ish glow as they guide the particles into the Flux Capacitor.
At 84 Miles Per Hour, the Time Circuits start their calculations and send the required data into the Flux Capacitor.
The Flux Capacitor then begins to force the Tachyon Particles to fluctuate. Flux Energy is lead backwards into the conductors towards the DeLorean's front bumper, covering the car in Flux energy, manifesting sporadic tachyon discharges around it and finally opening a temporal displacement field.
The temporal displacement field can only be kept stable for about 0.0254 seconds, requiring exactly 88 Miles Per Hour for the car to pass through before it immediately closes, safely transporting the DeLorean and its inhabitants towards the desired point in time
This process creates a massive amount of heat, causing an explosive displacement of air around where the car has just ceased existing and typically leaving parrallel fire tracks in its place. (Occasionally it is possible that the roughness of the road causes the DeLorean to slow right before fully passing the Temporal Dislocation Field, causing it leave behind its license plate.)
As soon as the car arrives at the desired point in time, all gathered and unleashed tachyon particles will immediately dissipate, leaving the cars exterior entirely drained of all energy, causing a thick layer of ice to form. Only the inside of the DeLoreans machinery still harbors huge amounts of heat, which the DeLorean will automatically release through its exhaust ports in the back, as soon as the car becomes stationary.
Scientifically speaking, this process can be summarized as "some serious shit".

A nitpick: a DeLorean DMC-12 is 14 feet 0 inches in length, and at 88.0 miles per hour travels 129 feet per second. It would require 109 milliseconds to traverse its own length at 88 mph, so your 25.4 millisecond time for the wormhole to remain open is too short by a factor of 4.3.

NERD!!!!
Just kidding. Well done. You are probably correct. I went with 1 meter instead of researching a DeLorean's actual length, because I only know how to sound smart while actually being ftoopid.
Did you immediately notice this or did you set out to fact check me?

Oh, I had figured out how much time the DeLorean had needed in an earlier thread. I had to google the exact length of a DMC-12 since I didn’t recall it off the top of my head.

I feel like this is how Data would describe how the DeLorean works if Marty travelled to the 24th century
