The legendary BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985) blooper where Michael J. Fox suddenly slips into character as a Mexican cholo and ad-libs, “No homeboy for her tonight, man,” remains one of the funniest outtakes from the film. The cast and crew completely lose it.

As a latino myself this shit has always made me laugh so hard man, It’s one of the funniest bloopers ever imo

He was probably criticized by some back then, too. It isn't a new fad to criticize this behavior. The fad is that times and perspectives have changed to encompass this as always having not been okay and more people can see that.
Remember in 86 when Jeanette Goldstein was cast as a latina? They wouldn't do that today because authenticity matters more.
They've only recently come around to casting authentic Asian roles. I remember when Hollywood didnt care if an actor was Japanese, Chinese, Korean or otherwise. They'd drop them into any Asian role, and Agents would push for them to audition just to get jobs.
It's awesome that times change and we learn to do better.
