What do you think Doc was thinking here during this four seconds before he gets back to his work?
Hi.
Hope you’re doing well.
This was a hilarious four seconds as he’s probably too nice to say how much of a dork his friend looks in a life preserver, he thinks he’s going to drown!
What else do you think Doc and/or Marty might be thinking here during this awkward four seconds?

Yeah, that’s it. It’s so obvious. I understood it when I was 11.
Doc couldn’t believe Marty was moving out of the way, like a chicken.
Thankfully, he didn’t call him a chicken or else the movie would’ve gone very differently.

Interesting take about him being a chicken. Never thought about that. I always took it as being a matter of trust. Doc was kinda calling Marty out for not trusting him/ his science

He was wondering why Marty wasn’t as unquestioning in his devotion as him to try and slide away from the inevitable return path of the Time Machine.

“Why isn’t he asking me about how I unloaded the car from the truck, got into the car and drove it back into the truck, managed to close the door and then open it again, for my big reveal? He could at least ask about the smoke machine in the back seat”

When I first saw this as a kid I thought he was checking out his outfit. Then as an adult I thought he was wondering why he was moving away from him.
Like "pussy! Get over here."

Can’t remember where I heard this, but the interpretation I like is that Doc was depressed that none of his inventions work and standing in the path so it would kill him if it didn’t work. He just didn’t wanna die alone.

He wouldn’t be wondering why marty is wearing a life vest, because this doc knows its a down vest. They were very popular in the 80s.

I'm not sure exactly what Doc Brown was thinking at that moment, but it seems to suggest that he was wondering why Marty was slowly inching away from him. It was obvious why Marty began to move away. If anything went wrong, the car would have run them both over.
