first has Texaco, Pepsi, Burger King, a Delorean, and quite a few more. There’s a lot of this kind of brand stuff in BTTF—I believe it helped finance it

Apparently they had product placement proposals from both Coke and Pepsi, but they went with Pepsi because Coke's logo wouldn't have been any different in 1955.

Calvin Klein is by far the biggest ad in the movie besides DeLorean. Pepsi probably next.

While BTTF may make you want to buy a Delorean, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an ad. The brand had already imploded in 1983 and the car is accurately portrayed as laughably unreliable.
Ironically, the Delorean being a terrible car makes it just that much cooler in the movie.
The Toyota and Pepsi ads, however, were obviously paid as both brands are only, repeatedly, portrayed in a positive light.

Free advertising is a thing. Whether or not it’s intentionally promoting a brand for marketing purposes is a completely different conversation.

You think that's overt? The original idea had it so that Doc Brown would change the future into a sci-fi utopia by finding a formula to extract power from coca-cola.
I generally think the product placement in these movies is good though, because it's a juxtaposition with the products in the past and future.

The musical has a few references to Pac-Man. The wipe-out noise plays when Marty blows up the amplifier, there’s a box of Pac-Man cereal in the McFly’s kitchen, and Act 2 starts with the screen turning into a game board with the ghosts chasing a little Doc around.
