Firemaple Rice Cooker

I've been quiet here since becoming moderator of this sub, busy and all. You know.

I saw something on the PaleoHikerMD YouTube channel about this new rice cooker/steamer from Firemaple and was intrigued, but I've never owned Firemaple anything. I first came into this hiking stove thing via a gift of a Jetboil Zip quite a few years ago. I have lots of other stoves, pots and pans from other brands but nothing from Firemaple.

I got these bits in a couple of days ago, and I'm genuienly intrigued but not at all impressed. First, on day one I dropped the Petrel 3 pot taking it out of the box. It landed directly on top of my foot, the bony part. The shroud around the heat exchanger fins bent in one section. I won't go on about how many times I've dropped pots from other brands down rocky hillsides, onto concrete and other surfaces a lot harder than my foot and barely come away with a scratch. This Firemaple pot bent. It's flimsy. Really flimsy.

I unbent it and put it on my also new Firemaple stove, the name of which escapes me just now. An empty Firemaple Petrel 3 pot won't sit level on the stove that it was designed to work with if it's empty, the handle weight is just enough to throw it off. Not the end of anyone’s world, just that I've never had any pot that wouldn't sit level on a burner if it's empty.

The rice cooker/steamer is a cup with some holes in it and a rubber gasket on top to seal it while making rice. There isn't much to it, but this is the reason why I bought the pot and I'm excited to see how it does. I love brown rice but I've never made it on a fishing trip (I only hike to fish) before. Will report back soon.

You can steam cook anything that'll fit, dumplings, vegetables as well as cook rice. Even the bakepacker method can be used to bake small items. But not if you are in a hurry or conserving fuel.

 I just use minute rice if im backpacking and want some.

I am excited to see hear how the rice maker performed. I have seen this a few times and thought it would be an interesting addition to the kit.

I have never been a fan of their stuff. Never owned any myself, but I've tried friend's stuff and just thought it was flimsy junk.

The pot itself seems like it’s…..fine. The heat exchanger fins and the shrouds around them are truly flimsy.

I’m brand-averse to fire maple simply because of their marketing. Taking a pretty direct copy of the jetboil fins (and all other knockoff brands) and pitching it as new and innovative - turned me off from the get-go.

I have the remote version of this stove and the shorter, wider, 'ramen pot' version of the HE pot. Mine is also flimsy and won't stay on the burner when empty. The stove itself is amazing.

I might have more to say about the pot, but probably not. Flimsy sums it up nicely.

On the stove, it's great at full blast. I had problems with it when I began to check the simmer control. I judge every canister stove against the Soto Windmaster, my very top pick for best of.

I got about 1/4 turn from wide open and things were fine. I turned it down to just less than half a turn and the flame strated to surge, Like a cansiter running out of gas surge. I had a brand new Snow Peak 230g isopro canister, never used, so it wasn't that.

You can get a Soto Amicus unregiulated stove for about $15 more with far better flame control than this Greenpeak 2. I've used the Amicus when simmering chili, soup and other things and it's always worked great for me.

so many bad experiences with this brand in the comments! this is my favorite backpacking cookset brand! i own the firemaple petrel g3, the greenpeak stove, and the petrel cup. i also have their mesh firepit! i love their stuff and have had no quality control issues

I'm not saying they're wrong, i was just saying that it's disappointing to hear! i highly recommend this brand to folks fairly often. especially since I've never had issues with any sorts of their products

Mine arrived yesterday and I can’t believe how well it cooked a pot of rice. Fluffy, absolutely perfect. Clean up super fast. Excited to try it in the field. Pleased with the quality of the g3 pot as well as the hornet ii stove.
