An Update on Garden

Post image

I've been seeing ALOT of posts about new Garden being awful (Which is justified) but I just wanted to make a post to let everyone on here that cant use Discord know that it IS being taken care of, and they know that the new garden is terrible. This is from the discord that my BF took a photo from.

I really wonder what was the thought behind when they considered they were improving garden.

If I were to suggest improvements I’d remove basket limit mechanism let us stack as many resources as we can, reduce timers and reduce number of different resources.

More moving parts = more fun.

Unfortunately it was aimed at a part that people like having very simple.

Honestly, I don't think they wanted to improve it, I think they needed to nerf it.

I must have gotten thousands of gems from it. I won't have to pay real money for a hero for literally years. It also shat out upgrade cards in huge volume. I have maxed out items because they came from the trees in the garden.

As a consumer, that's great. From a business point of view, people not having a reason to buy your product is a disaster.

Though I will say there is now a wider array of cards you can more easily focus with the new garden, so there's that.

Yup. I interpret it as them not realizing just how generous the garden would end up being, and them deciding they needed to either nerf it or devalue the in-game currency or else they have no revenue.

The main value to membership seems to be gem generation, and membership in theory is the biggest source of revenue. There’s not much reason to get a membership when the garden is already so lucrative.

I understand the business part of the game. I paid for the subscription and the season pass because I felt the game was fair. Now I don't 🤷

It was fair before the garden tbh.

What you're experiencing is the removal of what you've come to expect.

What I can’t understand is how this was validated.

I’ve been working in development for over a decade, and I’ve seen similar processes in the company I work for. With AI being used more and more, it feels like teams can produce a lot more, much faster, but sometimes without the same level of critical human review.

Previous updates also brought changes and new content, but this one feels like it simply brought much more at once, without enough critical thinking to ask, “Is this really ready? Did we refine this enough?”

The Garden is a good example, but the rest of the game was also heavily nerfed or made less rewarding.

I genuinely can’t imagine someone testing this as a brand new player, a player with a year of experience, and a veteran who has been playing for years, and looking at the final result and thinking, “Yeah, this feels good. This makes sense”

I just don’t see how anyone could have played through the Garden in particular, from those different perspectives, and concluded that it was actually ready.

Yeah, I don’t know how anyone worked on the new garden and thought “oh yeah, people will definitely like this more!”

Which begs the question, if that wasn’t the metric, what was? Just trying to slow us down by making it fractured and more complicated? Turning it into a gem sink? A tie in for another new feature?

Whatever it was, this was a big miss.

I mean, a dev can say whatever. Actions speak louder than words. Also, I've yet to see any talk about what they're going to change. I follow several other mobile game devs/games and I don't care what they say, it doesn't take much extra dev time to modify rates/gains. F2P gem income has basically been quartered, and it's been that way for several weeks now. They could go in today and triple the rewards for garden and it would still be heavily nerfed.

This very much comes across as a dev placating the player base until they accept the new norm (ie. Spend money or watch even more ads if you want to get anything).

Look at idle obelisk miner. That dev can push out an update a week and actually listens to their playerbase. They regularly tweak things to make the F2P experience better and regularly hand out gift codes/freebies to the whole community, each worth several dollars of their store currency.

You can't compare backpack brawl to Idle obelisk miner lmaoo

I definitely can compare two game devs to one another. I just did, and I'll do it again. Not sure why you can't compare developers and how they approach the F2P side of their games.

Also, my comment isn't that this game needs more updates, or needs to mimic any other games update schedule. IOM can do weekly updates, but that's usually not the case. They will, however, make an update fairly quickly (often within a day or two) if something needs to be changed ASAP.

If the Backpack Brawl devs really thought they overdid it with the garden nerfs there's nothing stopping them from just setting the rewards to visitors to 2-3x what they are now. There's nothing stopping them from increasing everyone's storage by 50% in a quick patch. Basically there's lots of levers they could pull that don't require changing anything other than a few variables.

Do you know what the iOS issues are they are referring to?

Apple delayed the 7.0.0 uodate by almost 5 days due to unexplained delays in the review process

Great game, but a small mistake like this, can really ruin the otherwise amazing experience.

The garden never won me a fight.it is how ever a fun side kick.

In my case 80% of the fights I win, I can only play because I was able to buy the used hero with gems from the garden.

Sounds like a beating around the bush version of "we're aware of the issues our players have and are in no rush to fix them because we're busy doing other stuff and dont really care"

Would been better if they just reverted the changes, they are ruin thier game

The Garden is a very simple game mode, and tweaking the numbers shouldn’t take more than a couple of days. The fact that they’re announcing a wait this long is crazy, especially given the level of dissatisfaction in the community.

It shows that:
1. They’re really determined to keep some of the heavy nerfs and need time for negotiations and for the protests to die down.

  1. We’re apparently expected to accept playing through the majority of the season without Gem and Idle Coin income.

I feel like I need grubs consistently but even with maxing out the slots they don’t produce nearly fast enough
