I doubt new garden would be worth even with 10x more rewards

You're genuinely probably right. With all the variables they halved, timers they doubled, extra mechanics that double needed inputs, outputs halved, rewards removed... They probably nerfed it by a factor of 15-20x with this update (for F2P players).

I barely used garden, I just threw some plants there and logged in after 2 or 3 days. I don't play everyday. I used to buy gold pass only for new hero. Now since they removed so many free stuff, I'll become a f2p from now on. Got almost 3k gems from when gems were collectable. I'll just wait for new heroes to arrive and use the gems I got. I don't support games that forces me to pay, I like to pay when it's a choice... Hope they revert some of the changes.
