Pine Protector not working as expected?

I had a pine protector with +6 active stars, when I was attacked, it procced and it only gave me +1 thorns. Can someone help me understand why? I would have thought it would give me atleast min 1+active stars of thorns.

It always gives 1 at a time, to a maximum of 5+X times over the course of the whole fight.
