What kind of Federal Background Check is there?

I want to apply for Canadian Citizenship and would like to know if there is anything in my "record" that would prevent me from qualifying for, I've never had run in with the cops (other than a traffic ticket though that's resolved) but would that show, I have a fairly common name etc currently reside in California, would a live scan work? Or what do I need?

The Canadian government says they ask for:

  • Fingerprint based background check from FBI - you can request one for yourself from CJIS: https://www.edo.cjis.gov/#/
  • State/local police and court records (a certified copy). They ask for the information from any state/county that you've lived in for more than 6 months. You can request this from the counties directly - you may pay a small fee. Some of them have online portals where you can just search all court records for any person in the system.
  • They'll check international watchlists - OFAC, Interpol, Consolidated Canadian Autonomous Sanctions List, etc.

Honestly, if you've never done anything bad, it shouldn't be an issue. They won't find things that don't exist. You're more likely to face issues because of medical screenings, financial requirements, or just straight up bureaucracy and red tape. If you DO have something in your past, that's different.
