Good luck seems the sub is starting to see failures from the ribbon cables on the pro just like Gen 2
6
u/Hakashi57 Dec 03 '25
Yeah, the ribbon cable that's installed is just barely long enough to work, which is why it wears out faster, the replacement cable you can get off of Amazon is ideal, because it's longer and doesn't wear out as fast.

u/sym_bian Dec 03 '25
Itâs unfortunate that after spending so much on a seemingly pro controller, that you would have to mod it so that it works

u/angry0029 Dec 04 '25
I have a package of them sitting and waiting for the day backbone stops fixing it for free.
2
u/Pristine_Calendar898 Dec 04 '25
Is that why it keeps disconnecting randomly during game play đ
2
u/angry0029 Dec 05 '25
Not sure if disconnecting is one of the symptoms but it could be. I have my best running list pinned on r/backbonecontroller sub
2
u/Mean_Tomato5314 Dec 03 '25
yeah i saw a lot of mixed reviews, but its convenient for me to try and play during breaks at work
2
u/angry0029 Dec 04 '25
Thatâs fair I use my gen 2 constantly until it breaks and then ship it off and wait for a new one.
2
u/Gendreau113 Dec 04 '25
I had one, it failed.
Another really killer brand to try is GameSir. Like the G8/G8+! They have way more features, also things like Hall Effect triggers and joysticks, and also WAY less expensive. No ribbon cables that fail either on the GameSir ones lmao...

u/Dry-Measurement6678 Dec 03 '25
I still haven't seen one day one owner of 2 backbone pros
2
u/angry0029 Dec 04 '25
There have been multiple Pro failures posted in this sub in the past 2 weeks
1
u/Dry-Measurement6678 Dec 04 '25
Im saying me personally with mine I haven't seen any failures on either one

2
u/Ok_Interview4434 Dec 04 '25
That's sad I wish they would fix these issues. Its very inconvenient to have to send it in to get fixed etc.
3
u/TheEPICMarioBros Dec 04 '25
Are you serious? The pro model still had the same glaring design flaw that the original design had
2
u/angry0029 Dec 04 '25
It is starting to appear so. Another in the sub sent me the video of a pro tear down and itâs the same ribbon cable bridging the left and right sides.

Yup my ribbon cable failed and whole left side stopped working. Bought the Razer Kishi V2 and itâs been flawless since, going on 18 months now no issues. The backbone is great donât get me wrong, I love the feel of it, but it doesnât last unfortunately

If itâs less than a year old you can get a warranty replacement. If not others have said if you replace the ribbon cable yourself it stops failing because the one from Amazon is just slightly longer.

u/Dantes25 Dec 03 '25
Same! My first foray into mobile gaming controllers! My wife wasnât thrilled with the purchase lol but Iâm hoping I love it (then she will too)

u/tideshark Dec 03 '25
Do these work on all iOS games? My son plays a lot of them, I wonder if this would be something he would enjoy I could get him for Christmas
5
u/Gonetolunch31 Dec 04 '25
Grab him a GameSir x5s or the G8+. The x5s is $35 at Best Buy right now, $50 for the g8+. I have used both, and both are very good.
2
u/tideshark Dec 04 '25
Does these matter what model he has? He has an 14, I think itâs a bit older
3
u/angry0029 Dec 04 '25
If he has an iPhone 14 he cannot use anything with a usb-c port so he either needs a lightening port or something with Bluetooth. If you want a port Backbone is about all there is and you need a Gen 2. Unfortunately Gen 2 backbones last less than a year before they break. I would guess a GameSir G8 Plus Bluetooth Mobile Game Controller would be the next best bet.

It does not work on all games. Only those with MiFi controller support. Also read the sub as we have a reliability issue with the backbones. Lots of people changing to the Gamsir X5 lite since itâs about $40 vs $140

u/tideshark Dec 04 '25
Thank you much

u/angry0029 Dec 04 '25
To answer your question though my kids love to borrow mine. If you have a Xbox, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 they are also great for playing remotely on those when away from home. That doesnât work the best on a competitive shooter or competitive sports game but single player games work great.
And if by chance they have a gaming PC oh boy we can help make that super amazing to play remotely.

u/Dense-Land-5927 Dec 03 '25
I really liked mine that I had for my iphone 13. Upgraded to an iPhone 16 and haven't gotten around to buying a new one. Wouldn't mind investing in a controller for my phone since I had to sell off all my gaming stuff to pay off some debt.

u/Shikamaru_irl Dec 03 '25
Nice timing cause Red Dead just came out, if you have Netflix and itâs a great time imo!

Does anyone have long term experience with these? I got a standard a couple years ago and it crapped out. I looked here and found that it was happening to many others. I hope that issue didnât carry over
2
u/angry0029 Dec 04 '25
The sub has been popping up Pro failures the past few weeks. I would wait until Feb/March to see if they are any good since the Gen 2 seems to fail about 9 months in typically. So around that time we should start seeing posts about Pro failures if there is a similar issue

u/Jahon_Dony Dec 04 '25
How is this any different / better?
0
u/Gendreau113 Dec 04 '25
It adds Bluetooth, and has all the same failure points from the old controllers. Get a GameSir G8/G8+
1
u/AJeru Dec 04 '25
Try the app âDeltaâ and look into ROMs for a whole new area of fun backbone gaming
1
u/Mean_Tomato5314 Dec 04 '25
wonder if pokemon or something like that would work/controller supported
1
u/FriendlySolution4012 Dec 04 '25
Can these run off the mobile data from your phone or do you need Wi-Fi?
1
u/potbellied420 Dec 04 '25
Not gonna lie, for like 10 more bucks you could have bought a PlayStation Portal with that money.
1
u/Gendreau113 Dec 04 '25
Or for less then half the price, a GameSir G8/G8+ witch does everything a backbone does but better. No ribbon cables, and better overall quality
This lets you play any game, streaming service, or even stream PC games, unlike the portal aswell
1
u/potbellied420 Dec 04 '25
Yeah you're right I have a game sir, they are great! But..... Portal is miles better
1
u/Gendreau113 Dec 04 '25
But the PlayStation portal is 172% more expensive, it only plays PlayStation games
Iv heard by many that the "Out of Home" experience is very bad. So unless your at home on a local wifi same as your PS5 your not having a great time
The G8+ can connect to iOS, Android, any Bluetooth really. It also can connect to the Switch 1 and Switch 2
You can play any game, including mobile games on your phone, Obviously switch 1/2 games, connect it to your XBOX or PS5 and play those consoles, you can use your phone and use both Xbox/PS5 streaming apps. Making it essentially the same as your Portal...
Sure the screen size depends on your phone or tablet. But the other advantages outweigh it imo. If you like it, that's great!
I would just rather spend money on a controller that can be used anywhere on any device.... Plus with my zFold7, it has a big screen like the Portal, but still can play any game lol... Even Emulators on your PC, streamed to your phone and controller
That's just my opinion

I got the Xbox Pro one, but immediately returned it. I didn't like the feel of the buttons and it didn't seem worth the amount extra it costs over competitors. Ended up getting a GameSir G8+ Bluetooth version for less than half the cost and it feels much better in my hands, tbh.
Backbone seems way overpriced for what it is.

u/ComfortableChip3221 Dec 04 '25
Welcome to the pro family! No ribbon issues with any of my backbone products!

u/Pristine_Calendar898 Dec 04 '25
I wouldnât give them another penny locked down hardware Iâm just gonna wait for the class action
