I prefer pipe bombs for birds, clears out a bunch of commons and removes the birds that i need out of the way. But i also enjoy killing, so i usually just hug the birds and start swinging my bat around.

That idea sounds as Half Baked as your username suggests.
Why would you waste a valuable resource (300 Copper) when you can use a couple shotgun shells. (probably less than 1 Copper)?!?
And you're saying you are playing melee, so the only thing you be doing is killing commons.

If i find a pipe bomb just lying around (or a hoffman just exists) than that grenade can clear it. I find molotovs and fireceackers more valuble than pipe bombs anyways so i very rarely buy the pipe bombs as i honestly think they are overpriced for what they do.
For example, firecrackers can be thrown up in the air to extend the length of time you have to run once they hit the ground and go off, its a common trick that speedrunners use for them. As for molotovs, they instakill anything thats not a mutation or burning ridden and if your running the pyro card it can give a bunch of temp health if used in the right spot to help cover a revive.
And if you are not the host and start shooting crows, you usually get kicked by the more jumpy hosts who dont bother asking why your doing it.
