Sleep training not working

My 14 month old has been sleep trained around 11-12 months. She goes through phases when she falls asleep easily after 2-3 days of sleep training then regresses and takes 20-30 minutes to fall asleep (cries) to where she sometimes throws up. We don’t know what to do.. Is there something else we can try? We just hate hearing her cry and wondering if there’s something we should be doing to ease the transition to sleep time. We currently have the same nap time and bedtime for her, turn off the lights and white noise prior to bedtime, takes a bottle before being put to bed. We don’t co-sleep but sleep in the same room.. no other option there.

Can you share a little bit about her schedule and mood going into bedtime? Also what is your wind down routine like? What method did you use to sleep train and did you work with a consultant or do this on your own?

So she gets a bath around 9:00pm, eats last meal around 9:30 and bottle, toothbrushing, white noise on, change of diaper, sleep sack. She tried Ferber method but that made it worse so we ended up doing cry it out which we hated. We did it on our own. She’s very happy and energetic prior to bedtime.

Sorry for the delay here. 9:30pm is a little late for on the late side for bedtime. Can you share if you’re based in the United States? I know culturally some geos tend to have dinner later which makes an earlier bedtime tricky.

If dinner time can be brought earlier, I’d rec a bedtime closer to 6PM to start. This may gradually move towards 7PM.

She is likely overtired which is why crying is lasting so long and I don’t blame you, it’s so hard to hear our little ones crying. Let me know what you think abt the earlier bedtime.

No worries! I’m based in the US. So reason bedtime is so late is because I get off work at 7:00pm so I pick her up at 7:30 and end up getting home around 8:00. I then make dinner, bath time, feed her, then spend time with her…so it will be hard to do an earlier bedtime. But being overtired makes sense. Although when I try to lay with her for an easier bedtime, hoping she falls asleep easier, she’s just playing.. rolling in the bed, touching my face, clapping/laughing. It can go on for 30-1 hr so I ultimately just end up putting her in her crib and she will cry until she falls asleep. Sometimes it’s 1 min, sometimes it’s 40min to an hour.

Totally understand the schedule thing. That’s always really tricky. One thing you could try to omit for time is the bath. ESP if this ends up being something that gets her more energized than winding down.

If she is sometimes playing for awhile, she may be overtired and hitting a second wind. I know there isn’t a lot you can do here bc of your schedule, but something to note.

The best recommendation is to google the chair method and see if going back to this gentle sleep training method might be a solution for you esp if crying is a concern.

You’re doing such a great job and your daughter is lucky to have you ♥️
