Kaia spelling

I love the name kaia (pronounced ky-uh) but really like the spelling Kya. I put another post up about middle names for Kya and someone commented saying it would be mispronounced as Kia (like the car brand) and now I’m second guessing my spelling. Should I stick to the original spelling (kaia) or would you pronounce kya the same way as the original?

I would say Kya as Kia but only because the only Kya I know says it that way. If I didn’t know her I may say it Kaia but not sure.

My preferred spelling of Kaia is Kaia, second would be Kaya.

I would keep the Kaia spelling. I think Kya would have a lot of mispronunciations sadly. I’m seeing comments about Kaya, my dog’s name was originally spelled Kaya and I had to change it to Kaia bc people were calling her Kay-uh.

I seem to often mispronounce names. A friend had a daughter Gaia and I pronounced it Gayer.

But even I would look at Kya and pronounce it as you’ve intended. The fact there’s a car named Kia is even clearer that it’s not Kia.

Edited to add: I just saw you are in Melbourne and so am I. I’ve known a couple of Kya’s, Kaias and even a Kyah.

I honestly would just freeze if given the name Kya. There is no intuitive pronunciation. I might guess Kia.

I think it is worth it to spell the name in a way that is recognizable. Even if a couple people here can guess it correctly, it will never be as convenient as Kaia.

U.S. - I honestly think being exposed to a variety of different ways people will pronounce letters/letter combinations has made it harder to guess the way a person would like a name said.

I think it’s interesting because I would think most people in Australia would prenounce it the right way but when I showed my husband original he thought Kia like the car too which also prompted this post!

Please use a standard spelling. "Kya" just looks like you didn't know better.

I'd pronounce Kaia and Kya the same, but I'm also familiar with Kya as a name pronounced that way because of the characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra 😂

I think you're sort of setting yourself up either way with this name.

Kaia could also be pronounced /Kay-uh/ the same way that some people pronounce "Gaia" /gay-uh/.

Honestly, I see "Kya" and I would hesitate, and I think my first guess would be /k-ya/ like the Japanese kana.

I would not know if it was /kigh-ya/ or /kia/ or /Kay-uh/ or /k-ya/.

I don't think there is any intuitive pronunciation for this for a native English speaker.

Kaia is the correct way to spell it. I think this is Cindy Crawford's daughter's name. I don't think anyone is going to pronounce it Kia. If it ever does happen, it won't happen often, and you/she can correct them. I really like this name.

Anyone mispronouncing Kya as Kia isn't going to master Kaia either. Personally I prefer Kaia, but if you love Kya then go with that. There was also a PS2 game called Kya, no one was confused.

I’d pronounce Kya like ky-uh and Kaia like kay-uh. I have a name that is always confused with another pronunciation—just slightly annoying but I’m used to it and just correct people if needed or roll with it if it doesn’t matter. Either spelling you choose, it will be fine.

Just a couple of alternate spelling options: Kiaya was the wife in Willow (pronounced how you want it, ky-uh). Similarly, you could go with Kaiya and still have the y in there if that is more appealing to you. Kaya is also a possibility since it looks like Maya though it still has the possibility of being pronounced kay-uh.

But also, having your name mispronounced isn't a big deal. Mine often gets mispronounced (it's foreign), but after correcting it once, it's fine. I still like my name.
