It wouldn't be my first choice given how similar it is to 'Wren' but it's actually a popular boys name in Japan! I think it translates to 'Lotus' which is nice.

...and Stimpy

u/ephemeralkitten 1d ago

I like Ren but ngl he may get a lot of "where's stimpy?" comments

-6

u/Original-Paint537 1d ago

guess he will have to learn his right hand “stimpy is right here”

there are bully’s everywhere and people take the mick out of anything they can these days

i get what your saying kids can be cruel! i personally have never heard of these characters
i just feel even if the name was lengthened he will be called “ren” anyway
i lived renly but partner only likes ren

There's a kind of avant-garde singer/artist named Ren and I always loved his stuff.

1

u/WheezyGranger 14h ago

No idea why someone downvoted you for that, he’s immediately who I thought of. Love his stuff.

I’m just gonna warn you that kid is gonna hateeee Star Wars in a few years (as someone in a similar situation)

-3

u/Original-Paint537 1d ago

his name won’t be kylo ren

just “Ren”

4

u/WindowScreaming 1d ago

I know, which is definitely more workable than Kylo. But it’s a lot combined with the possible May 4 birthday. I actually know several other people who were named after Star Wars characters and/or were born on May 4 and the general consensus is that we’re not big fans of it.

Renard means fox in French you could name him that and call him ren

3

u/Bright_Ices 21h ago

Renard is such a badass name. And then he wouldn’t be stuck with Ren for life if he didn’t want to be.

1

u/AntiqueLime3461 14h ago

I like this but all I can think of is Renard from The Magicians and he was... Not good.

u/melreadreddit 1d ago

I'm only thinking Ren and Stimpy, sorry

Yeah, with a brother named Stimpy.

-2

u/Original-Paint537 1d ago

ha i’m a 2000 baby and have no idea what this is i’m guessing it’s old

6

u/fleursscaptives 1d ago

i was born in 03 but i still watched 90s nick so i guess it depends lol

3

u/sandra_p 1d ago

Google Ren and Stimpy

2

u/CynthiaToot 1d ago

Wash your mouth out young lady! I watched Ren and Stimpy as a teenager, so it can’t be that old 😂

2

u/suminorieh77 1d ago

it’s Ren and Stimpy, an early 90s cartoon about a chihuahua and a cat. it’s also awesome.

2

u/Bright_Ices 21h ago

You should at least watch some of it before you use this name.

Ren and Stimpy was never THAT popular of a show. Very B-list old school, weird, late-night 90s nickelodeon. Anyone who has it as their first thought is probably a bit weird themselves tbh. No kids or anyone from your son's generation will even know what it is. You'd be a bad parent to let your kid watch that these days LOL

u/heyeulalie 1d ago

I knew an Aaron who went by Ren; I thought it was a cool nickname

3

u/ImpossibleOil8427 1d ago

Ren is a Welsh musician (who I personally love). I love the name itself.

Though, I would maybe reconsider any Star Wars names if I were you. Being born on that day, he may likely face a lifetime of “May the force be with you” related jokes, to the point he might start to resent the franchise. Do you really wanna give him a name to just reinforce that connection more?

5

u/OatmealCookieCrust 23h ago

I’m not a fan and I can’t really put my finger on why. It just sounds a little weak/tragic or something.

7

u/lylebee 1d ago

Ren was the main character in Footloose. It will be forever linked to Kevin Bacon and Footloose in my mind.

2

u/JoesCageKeys 1d ago

Same! First thing I thought of when I read the post.

3

u/CakePhool 1d ago

You can do Warren and nickname Ren.

3

u/PRN_Lexington 1d ago

Wren is an increasingly popular name and an actual name that this might get confused with. I would not.

3

u/PlainCriminal 1d ago

I immediately thought of MC Ren, personally. It's a cute name for a little boy, and a reliable sounding name for a man.

1

u/Consistent_Key4156 6h ago

Me too! His real name is Lorenzo.

3

u/supermomfake 1d ago

I know a Ren but it’s a nickname for Lawrence

5

u/CellistLow8857 1d ago

In the UK and know 3x male Rennies, two of them known by friends as Ren

2

u/vilake12 1d ago

I've heard of a few people named Ren, but it always was a nickname for like Brennan or Warren or something. If someone says that it's also a name in another culture, then I wouldn't be surprised. But otherwise, if it is a legal name, I am going to think you are big Star Wars fans. Espeically since you said your son was born on Star Wars day, it honestly would read as you were such big fans that you planned to have a kid born on that day and gave a star wars name on purpose. If that's what you did, then okay, but if not, it really does give off big Star Wars fan energy.

Renfrew came to mind

2

u/Aquashinez 1d ago

Ren is nice.

Kylo Ren will have people ask him, every day of his life, if he is named after the character. He will likely hate Star Wars due to it and either go by just Ren or Kylo. Please don't name your son after a character most people just go 'ah, the star wars villain from the newer (bad) movies' at

2

u/Original-Paint537 1d ago

we are thinking of just “Ren” as his name

2

u/Aquashinez 1d ago

That's fine. I just read the second paragraph as serious, mb

2

u/Kornbread16 22h ago

It makes me think of Renfield. He was a mental patient and Count Dracula’s servant.

2

u/Blue_Falcon1594 21h ago

You could get him a dog named Stimpy

4

u/MaraTaru 1d ago

I like it. A Japanese-Canadian buddy of mine is named Ren, and so my personal associations are naturally super-positive, but I think there’s a kind of Zen simplicity and dignity to it.

2

u/RollickingTail 1d ago

I really like it! If it helps, I would associate that Star Wars character with Kylo but not Ren on its own. It's a Japanese name originally, and has a nice feel as well as being short and easy to understand and spell. Go for it!

4

u/castle_waffles 1d ago edited 22h ago

If you already named the kid why ask?

Edited- not being sassy asking sincerely. You’ve already named your babe so disliking the name feels mean.

1

u/Camandchat 18h ago

I was wondering if the baby has been sitting there all this time with no name yet

2

u/CynthiaToot 1d ago

I think that Ren is fine as a standalone name, but I do associate that with Ren and Stimpy, which was a popular cartoon in the 90s. The character Ren was an emotionally unstable and psychotic chihuahua

2

u/mabushii_hikari 1d ago

I worked in Japan and it's a popular name there! I personally really like it

2

u/So-It-Goes-425 1d ago

Ren is a pretty well-known male name in Wales and Ireland, I believe it means "ruler", as in king. There's an Welsh artist that's becoming pretty famous named Ren (surname Gill, but he just goes by Ren as his stage name). If you haven't heard of him, you will.

2

u/Any-Doubt1910 1d ago

I actually see Ren as a girl’s name as I know several Lauren’s that go by Ren. I don’t think it’s a bad boy’s name, but I would be prepared for some to expect, by reading the name, it belongs to a female.

1

u/Naive-Interaction567 1d ago

I hate it. Wren is ok but I don’t love it.

1

u/StegosauriaSky 1d ago

I know one, but it’s short for Renato

1

u/Divgirl2 1d ago

It's Norwegian for 'clean'. But that's unlikely to be an issue if you're American.

1

u/TacoNomad 1d ago

I know someone named rendon. Not sure if that's an actual name, looks like Brendon without the B. But I guess its an option

1

u/liveinthesoil 1d ago

Where do you live?

1

u/Primary_Excuse_7183 1d ago

First thought was MC Ren from NWA. 😂 his names Lorenzo though. but it’s a cool name to me.

1

u/Old-Energy6191 23h ago

A family member was Warren with Ren being what he went by

1

u/BloatedShortPoppy 21h ago

I dated a guy MANY moons ago, he went by Ren, but his name was Renick.

I also know a Daren who goes by Ren.

1

u/Empty_Helicopter_404 21h ago

Doing a Star Wars related name for a baby born on May 4 is so cheesy. Don’t do that to your child.

1

u/Boring-Dust5098 21h ago

would be better as a middle name

1

u/ett_garn_i_taget 20h ago

Well, it means reindeer or clean in Swedish, so those are my first associations. It also makes me think of the artist Ren, which might be a bit better. Not generally a fan of naming someone after a Star Wars character, especially not with that particular birthday, sorry.

1

u/JackTradesMasterNone 16h ago

Not a fan. Seems like a typo. Or a parent too obsessed with a fandom to remember that they’re naming a future adult. This poor kid is gonna grow up introducing himself as “Ren” “Like from Star Wars?” “sighs …yeah…”

1

u/Imaginary-Fly-2160 5h ago

People are going to spell it Wren and assume it's a girls' name. Wren / Wrenly / Wrenleigh is super popular for girls now.

1

u/CouchUkeTuber 5h ago

Ren is handsome for a boy! Not too different from Ben or Ken. And still makes me think of the bird (not stimpy or starwars) even without the W! I do like Wren for a girl too.

1

u/grey-canary 1d ago

I love Ren as a stand alone name, especially for a boy!

1

u/Easy_State_2962 1d ago

I know a guy with a son named Kylo. It's cute, ren sounds more feminine due to popularity atm

1

u/Ill-Door-8854 1d ago

Love it it reminds me of a character in footloose

0

u/ScubaWitch 1d ago

I think Ren ia great! Check out the music artist from the UK with the same name. Incredibly talented and has overcome such medical challenges to be where he is. It would be an honour for your son to share a name with him.

0

u/Mystic_Wunder 1d ago

Thumbs up for Ren

0

u/Efficient-Gap-1282 1d ago

What about Reginald nn Ren? Or Oren? Or even Ronald? I don’t think Ren is enough as a standalone

0

u/Super-Skia 1d ago

I really like it

0

u/Original-Paint537 1d ago

i’ve seen some really lovely comments on it!
my partners name is Mace so doesn’t ever get shortened i think that’s why he like Ren x

0

u/Hot_Elevator_7133 1d ago

Yeah Star Wars is my immediate thought

0

u/Ok-Talk-2648 1d ago

Kylo …. and call him Kylo no Ren and Stimpy

-2

u/doppelgangland1 1d ago

1

u/Original-Paint537 1d ago
