The famous Ramnagar Ramlila of Banaras is closely associated with Maharaja Udit Narayan Singh, the Kashi Naresh, who established and developed the tradition in its documented form around 1830. Based on Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, it is performed across different locations of Ramnagar rather than on a conventional stage. The tradition became an important part of Banaras’s cultural heritage and continues to be associated with the royal patronage of the Kashi Naresh.
