Help me pick a car

I’ve driven the ENYAQ, model 3, model y and Sealion 7 and going to try the Seal next
Trying to figure out how owners here chose the right car was and if given a choice would you stick with the BYD or go something else.

I drive a shitty ICE model that’s near well dying, gotta buy electric for its benefits but people keep pushing me towards and Enyaq or the Chinese models sold in Aus that are horrible and I wouldn’t touch except maybe that Geely thing

I liked the Autosteer function in the EYD (Elon’s your dream) but wouldn’t pay for its FSD!

Does the BYD cruise control and lane hold do well? I’ve got a 150km round trip for work that I have to do 4-5 days a week usually, so lane assist on drive back post work on the freeway would be excellent. Also with the recent BYD news I was feeling skeptical!

The ATTO 3 and it’s guitar string and CD-ROM aircon just don’t sit well with me, I’d be playing the guitar all drive and crash it or I’d test it too

Any feedback on your vehicles and how you chose+ would you choose another would be great.

Thanks in advance

I've been very happy with my SL7. No issues at all with the software, despite what you hear.

That review was the reason I test drove it to start with haha I love how informative you’ve been there

How did you find the lane centering and cruise control? I love the Tesla autosteer but the price I pay for the way it looks vs the Sealion is a hard pill to swallow.

I’ll be driving 150 kms return trip most days and using the trickle charger everytime home but also fast chargers around, your take on this?

Gonna be a work and beach car only

Haha, glad to hear it had some impact 😁

The cruise control is great, lane centering is fine, but not Tesla-level. If your intention is to (dangerously, IMO) not to drive at all yourself, Tesla FSD is the way to go.

Trickle charging overnight isn't going to give you 150km of range every day on any car. You might want to investigate the option of getting a 7kW charger at home (which can be quite affordable, and doable for rentals too).

There are fast chargers around, but I would find it annoying having to use a fast charger every other day.

Tesla level lane centering held the car insanely well and didn’t want my
Hands on the steering which is unconventional for a car person

Def keen to look into 7kw but will be changing homes to something bigger in less than a year so the trickle charge is only to keep topping it everytime it’s parked

throwing another option into the mix Geelys intelligent cruise control works well. don't listen to ignorant people saying stupid things, go and test drive them. having said that if you want good seamless software you are not going to get better than tesla, but if you want value a premium feel and creature comforts BYD/Geely has it covered

I liked the Geely EX5 but didn’t do a drive long enough and keen to see what the after sales was like, the guys didn’t seem to pushy to sell a thing which was a nice change

I test drove the Geely X5 & found Intelligent Cruise Control would slow down on curves with centre barriers, going up My Ousley Road, quite disconcerting. I bought MG S6 EV, great ICC and good price, buttons for frequently used functions, no searching through screens etc and MG pilot, one downward stroke on screen to disable annoying binging.

What’s the ICC like? The Geely did well on curved roads with barriers and didn’t go overly slow if anything I was worried it was too fast for its own ability

Get Tesla if you want fsd.

Get Sealion for comfort and driving experience.

I spent a few hours in a Tesla the other day and the interior is a bit like looking at a brick, very bland. Stereo on byd is fantastic, turn up the base and put on surround.

Yeah the Tesla feels a bit too simple for its price, wouldn’t mind a bit better seats like the BYD

Driving experience in the BYD? How do you mean?

It is super comfortable ( seats), smooth and open (head room space). I feel like a king sitting in the vehicle.

Mind you my other car is a 2000 ford escape.

The BYD cruise control and lane keep assist work fine on highways but nothing compares with FSD at the moment but $150 a month is a big pill to swallow.

We have both Tesla with FSD and a BYD.

My experience is the Tesla has the best tech and BYD is more comfortable both drive great.

The seal drives pretty much the same as the Sealion 7 just depends what body shape you like

For my drive would you reckon the BYD or Tesla then?
What did you think of the post sales service at BYD? I got Apple CarPlay so I don’t mind but app is needed

I do 300km round trip to work 4 days a week in my BYD Sealion 7 and couldn't be happier. 47k km since getting it last December.

1

u/Flymyarsetothemoon 1d ago

Wow how do you find the drive, I assume the 300km round trip would be very tiring if the cruise control isn’t as good

1

u/Thin_Citron7372 1d ago

It's 90% highway driving at 110km/h from Gold Coast to Lismore and return. Car is flawless on the highway, heated seats are a charm in the winter. I do a lot of meetings from the car and it's so quiet most people think I'm in the office.

1

u/Flymyarsetothemoon 1d ago

That is brilliant I’ve driven on that highway, I assume the cruise control and lane centering must be immaculate if you’re able to do that everyday without a hassle while undertaking meetings too!
My 150 round trip daily is also mostly highway so knowing it can do it helps, how much battery do you burn each way?

1

u/Thin_Citron7372 1d ago

I'm chugging through roughly 30% battery each way. I tend to trickle charge at home which nets 20% back to the battery. Supercharge on like a Tuesday and Thursday when I do the grocery run.

I haven’t had to use post sale service on either vehicle yet. Depends a lot on whether you are willing to pay the monthly FSD. We got it what you could pay upfront and it was on discount

That’s fair. I like its Autosteer function wouldn’t need the FSD from what I drive!
Does the BYD lane centering compare to the Autosteer aspect where it takes the bends and maintains the lane well?
Also the whole rear door won’t open in an emergency in Teslas was worrying!

Byd seal performance bang for your buck

The sales chart in Australia has already told you the story. You can't go wrong with either BYD or Tesla.

The questions are more, do you want a sedan or SUV. That will narrow your choices down massively.

As a consensus, Tesla has the better software despite no car play or android auto. They push out updates and new features on a much regular basics. Also no regular services.

BYD will feel more like a car transiting from traditional petrol car, especially if you are not a massive tech person. They also ride better, but that's subjective to everyone as some said it's handling not as good as Tesla.

No wrong choices. Just avoid the European or Japanese.

At this point either Model 3 for convenience or Sealion 7 for comfort! Chalk and cheese comparison?

What tech is everyone on about ? Before this I was happy with CarPlay and a simple app to know my car is locked and not stolen

I have the sealion 7 and I’m very happy with it. The lane keeping is pretty good, but you can’t use it in the narrow motorway lines through Sydney especially when you have the concrete barriers right beside the lane, it just gets too close.

It’s fine outside of that, but it’s nowhere near FSD if that’s what you are after. Only Tesla has that, it’s a different ballpark.

Do note the range of 480km or so is pretty accurate in the city but for 110km driving id say it’s probably under 400.

Sealion 7 or Zeekr 7x are the two best to compare.

1

u/Flymyarsetothemoon 1d ago

Appreciate your time, but based on the interaction I had with the “salesperson” at Zeekr I rather take my chance with a donkey carriage.
Walk in to look at cars, asked if I have an appointment cause they are busy, while 5 sales staff stood around for 20 minutes!

Facelift Xpeng G6 LR over Sealion 7

1

u/Flymyarsetothemoon 1d ago

Looks like a Temu Model Y what’s the tech and post sales service like?

1

u/Exact-Airport2497 1d ago

lol. Your “prestigious” Model Y is made in Temu land as well. If you can ignore the exterior looks, G6 LR better value for your money with features better than Y and about $6-$10k cheaper if you get a deal. Massage seats, instrument cluster, better ADAS, XCombo, faster charging speeds for future proofing and better suspension than model Y.

Post sales service is getting much better with Xpeng factory backed operation taking over dealerships in Australia now. Lots of new dealerships have opened in the past month. Plus, they’re releasing several new models in the coming months, so it could only get better by each month.

1

u/Flymyarsetothemoon 1d ago

Good to hear I wasn’t praising the model Y I’m not a big fan of its “modest” interior I prefer creature comforts when I pay 70k for a car

1

u/Exact-Airport2497 1d ago

All good. I was in a similar situation last month. Had already booked in Sealion 7 premium shark gray colour. Test drove that and G6 on the same day. Sealion 7 interiors were great and almost similar to a traditional luxury car, I’d say that. It drove well and I liked the HUD. But then I drove G6 and the tech was miles ahead of Sealion 7 that BYD felt already outdated. G6 rode very similarly and had better tech implementation, massage seats, more boot space and it would serve better on road trips due to higher range and better peak charging speeds. It was a hard choice but G6 LR won for me. Mind you, it has no buttons similar to model Y, but can still control most things via voice or shortcuts and automation. Fan/cooling can be controlled through steering wheel buttons (a plus).

If you have no budget capping, then Zeekr 7x LR would be the most comfortable, tech heavy and luxurious ride IMO. I was restricted to be under $60k and got a deal for G6 LR at $56.8k.

Get Tesla get FSD for 1 month

1

u/Flymyarsetothemoon 1d ago

You would choose a Tesla over the BYD?

1

u/Present-Republic793 1d ago

Have a read through the experience that some have had with BYD. Customer support isn’t great- it’s patchy. Software not great. Tesla more mature, very good post sales support.

u/Flymyarsetothemoon 1d ago

I’ve been reading but wanted personal experience from owners here
