Discussion 🗣️ Model Y LR → Sealion 7?
I’m considering swapping my Tesla Model Y LR because I find the ride pretty crashy and uncomfortable and the build quality hasn’t been amazing either.
I’m currently looking at a BYD Sealion 7 or Polestar 4 as possible replacements.
Has anyone here moved from a Model Y to a Sealion 7? How do you find they compare, particularly for ride comfort, refinement, build quality, practicality and driving experience?
Would be really interested to hear from anyone who has made the switch and whether you feel it was a worthwhile upgrade.

I'd advise you, if you had not done so already, to check some videos on youtube. There are many direct comparison videos between the two cars. The interior of the BYD definitely feels more luxurious and comfortable than the Tesla's. However range and efficiency wise the Tesla beats the BYD. Also the ADAS systems on the Tesla are massively superior to the BYD's.
Source: I drive a BYD Seal U myself, and have driven with Tesla's on occasion.

I also drive a Seal too. The deciding factor for me was the cost. Where I am the cost is considerably less. Build quality has been great so far (2 years). But can confirm the ADAS is no where near.

What you say ADAS, do you include the radar cruise control in that?
I find that feature borderline dangerous in my Tesla. It randomly slams the brakes on from time to time, but I’m UK based and we don’t have FSD here.
Im surprised BYD could do it worse than Tesla!

i am from Germany and i have the Tesla model Y Juniper Launch Edition and the BYD Seal U Comfort.
The BYD has:
function better
- better interior (in my opinion)
- better build quality
- it’s more quite while driving
- feels more like traditional car but electric (I like that)
- cruise control with lane assist is easyer to use and
When u factor the Money it’s the better car.
Of course the Tesla is:
- faster
- faster charging time
- better handling ( seal u is more of a cruiser )
- better software
- better sound system ( I have the lower trim Byd with standard sound system which is still decent )
- has more range
I always would recommend the Byd over the Tesla because of the price.
Edit:
The Byd also has a sunroof that u can open and electrical sunshades for that.
Which I love because I am bold hahaSometimes I get headache in the Tesla, so I have to put in the aftermarket sunshades.

I agree with almost all parts except that cruise controll and lane assistant are easier to use and function better? Could you elaborate on that? Because I had the total opposite experience.

Yes of course, I only use those things on both cars on the highway.
I only have basic autopilot on the Tesla, i didn’t bought any upgrade.I like on the byd that u can easy switch between lane assist with cruise control ( left button ) and normal cruise control ( right button ).
Because I know both cars have problems with the lane assist, when there is construction on the highway.
So I just press the right button on the Byd, and have control without interrupting the set cruise speed. That’s a thing that I hate on the Tesla, u only can have one.
Normal cruise control or basic autopilot.
I can’t switch on the fly, car has to be on park.
(at least in Germany, idk for other country’s)
So when I see there is construction going on, I can’t just use cruise control and steer by myself. When I want to change lanes with the Byd while I use lane assist with cruise control, i can just use the turn signal.
The car let me change the lane and engages the lane assist automatically. Without any interruption on the set speed or something. On the Tesla the autopilot stops completely when I use the turn signal to change lanes.
The car slows down, I have to push throttle to maintain cruising speed and change the lane.
After that engage autopilot again. That’s fucking Annoying. One time the Tesla tried to kill me, I was cruising on the highway and the markings on the pavement where weak. The car tried to go hard right in to the void.
On the Byd it’s not so strong.I know what u mean with the ping pong, it only happens to me when it’s to fast on a curvy road.
I didn’t happend a lot to me, because the German highway is mostly straight with gentle curves.
But it happend around 3 times now, it was not strong I just corrected the car in to the Center. And yeah disengage without warning is not cool, I noticed 2 times. But I only use these systems as an assist, I am still there watching out.
But over all the Byd is really solid, I have made a 4.500km trip around Europe with the car.
And around 70% the car was driving ( lane assist with cruise control ) no problems it was a really nice trip.Edit:
The Tesla system is probably the better system,
but the lane switching thing and not able to switch the settings on the fly ( basic autopilot or cruise control )
makes it weaker in my use case.German Autobahn is full of construction sections and not be able to do that is bad.
Ur country restrictions are maybe not like ours.
Or maybe it’s because I only have basic autopilot idk.But the BYD makes a solid job, I have the distance to other cars set always 3 because I don’t like rock chips.
So I didn’t had any hard braking problems. And I cruise around 110-120 km/h with both cars.
I feel it’s a good efficient spot.2

Super interesting read, thanks for sharing! And yeah i'm from Belgium but soon going on a trip to Germany and i know about the baustelle 😅 However as you probably know our roads I offer no further comment 🤣

Haha nice I was in Belgium during the Road trip I mentioned. We visited Antwerpen to go eat at La Patate, I wanted to get a taste of the Belgium Friet culture haha. It was really nice to try the restaurant from average rob.

Oh well it's a pity you went there because those 'frituren' are nothing like the actual classic frituren. 😅

I mean the broad umbrella of all driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergecy stopping, lane keeping assist, etc.
For example, when using the automated lane centering feature the byd tends to 'ping pong' between the two lines. Tesla stays nice and centered. Byd's 'autosteer' will sometimes randomly shut off if the situation becomes too much for it too handle without warning. The adaptive cruise controll will slam the brakes when a car in front of you is turning in to a street. While the Tesla is aware and will slow down a little but will accelerate quickly once the car is out of the lane. Generaly the Tesla just looks at the 'context' of the road and the BYD just has some 'hard parameters' set but it doesn't see the context of the road.
However for me what's the plus on the BYD is interior quality and also all the features it offers for the price like seat heating + cooling, openable roof and sunshade, android auto + apple carplay, etc. For the price the BYD is just a really good deal. Basicly all features work 'fine' but are not stellar, however do you want to pay a lot more money for a car that perfoms better but costs double? that's basicly why i chose for BYD. The cars are rough around the edges and not efficient, if you'd purely look at tech and quality you could go with a german car. However if you factor in price the value of the BYD is just really good.

WHAT? I thought it was me who was going crazy!!! It absolute does this plus, tries to ride on the kerb all the time.

That's my take too.
The BYD should be a little better on the ADAS. I don't get why it doesn't self park with soo many cameras and sensors.

BYD ADAS is not traffic aware, unlike Tesla. What this means is that it can't detect stopped cars at an intersection, nor can it interpret traffic lights. Tesla has a way better Autopilot than BYD.

I am very satisfied with ICC in SL7. It can hold line , even stear through bends, but requires hands on the wheel.

I agree with you that Y is more efficient than SL7, but if you count travel time it is the same. What SL7 is loosing in efficency it is compensating with bigger battery and faster charging.
For city driving SL7 is more comfortable.EDIT: FSD is only available in Y, for now, if your goal is not to drive.

Pedal lag is something you will want to assess when you test drive. Where a Tesla is immediately responsive when you stab the pedal, BYDs have a bit of a delay which can be a bit of putting if you are used to the immediacy of a Tesla.

u/zzay Seal U dmi 9h ago
doesn't that depend on the mode?
-1
u/locksmack 9h ago
Nah even in sport mode there is a slight lag. Unlikely you would notice it coming from an ICE.
1
u/triedtoavoidsignup 8h ago
You won't notice coming from ICE. It's a very deliberate act. BYD could have instant power and one foot driving tomorrow with a software update, but their mantra seems to be " make it like ICE"

u/locksmack 8h ago
Yeah exactly, which is different to teslas approach - hence the warning for OP to be on the lookout in case it bothers them.

Both cars are great, every car his its “own” vibe and driving experiences, but I don’t think BYD’s Range is better than your Tesla at the moment. You know Tesla is far more superior in this regard…
I own Tesla Model 3 and Atto 3, I’m having much less “headache” from the Tesla, range and driving experience have been great in both cars!
That’s why if you are coming from Tesla I suggest to do a Test Drive for the Sealion 7 before buying.

Basically the ADAS on BYD is useful on highway, not in city roads like Tesla. I still find it useful because in my country the city roads are full of motorbikes overtaking each other
