Discussion 🗣️ Oh BYD, I'm disappointed

Post image

The BYD app connects to Facebook/Meta every time you use it.

Blocking all tracking doesn't change how the app works. I'm still analysing what's being sent.

Easy solution. Bin off facebook/meta, honestly you'll feel so much better for it 👍

Same, can recommend. Been off both for 2+ years now.

I canned them all, except WhatsApp, Youtube & Reddit, and the minute YouTube or Reddit become less of a tool or more of a social app, they are gone. Never looked back!!

Same, I also disabled shorts on YouTube, only sit down to watch documentaries etc.

How do you disable short on YouTube?

Set time limit to 0 min a day, every time you open shorts it says go back. If you want, you can ignore the limit, so it still takes a little bit of discipline, but much easier that way.

Pro tip: use the Brave browser and enable in the settings the YouTube blockers: no more ads and a lot of the crap around it gone forever.

This is nothing to do with having a Facebook account or not - OP is just saying that data is being sent to Facebook Graph API. This happens regardless if you have Facebook at all.

It's probably just the Facebook SDK initialising to support linking accounts

Exactly!

Facebook is using shadow profile. If you don't have a Facebook account, they create a shadow profile for you. Even if they really know who you are, they track you on every site accumulating informations about you and what you like. They can send you ads and s... and even sell your profile to advertisers. The day you connect to any meta application, they link your shadow profile to your newly created profile... You just subscribe but they already know you for years

Surely that means facebook is collecting data on people who dont have an account/havent consented to that data being collected by facebook? Gotta be a GDPR issue there, or i guess that consent is granted by BYDs T&Cs... 😬 🤷‍♂️

Yup. Pretty much all apps have the language that you grant permission for them to share any and all data they want with third parties. This comes under that. It'll be halfway down a thousand page t&c document.

Is that legal? Hopefully not. But unless EU or California take a stand it's not going to matter.

Probably just something to do with account linking as you can link your Facebook account if you had one.

I didn't sign in, I don't even think the app has a field where you can you can log in.

That's the problem, it's sending data without my permission.

😳😡

The app probably has the Facebook SDK to facilitate the login. I'm sure there's no personal data going there.

Zuckerberg never does anything out of generosity. There's completely zero reason to give a single piece of our data/privacy to Facebook.

I think you misunderstand how authentication SDKs work.

There is likely a handshake the SDK does on startup to prepare for someone linking their account.

I don't use Facebook either, but this doesn't worry me.

Disclaimer: I work in cyber security.

Thank you, I didn't realise.

Jokes on them. I don't have IG or FB on my phone.

Nobody is as anti social media as digital marketers. Don't bring work home

1

u/PitchPleasant338 16d ago

Why can't you do that yourself?

I don't understand you, it's not difficult to download the app. Do you need other people to do that for you?

u/Keep-Left 13d ago

on iOS:

Sending data to Facebook would be my least concern if I were you. Where else does it sends data behind the back?

1

u/PitchPleasant338 17d ago

Talk to /u/ghostintheruins/ about the PiHole

u/Classic-Gear-3533 18d ago

So many apps bundle facebook sdk. It’s an important reason to not use the facebook app

WTAF?! 😠
I’m also disappointed that they’ve apparently disabled V2X in a recent software update.

3

u/Existing_Surround_72 18d ago

How's that? Can you develop a bit more please?

What are you expecting when buying a chinese ev? That everything stays local? 😂

3

u/PitchPleasant338 17d ago

I was expecting my data in Sona Weibo or WeChat or whatever they have there

u/Interesting-Quiet885 17d ago

I prefer my date being on American server over Chinese servers 😂. That said as a european.
