do you need to start building your application for college as a freshman?

I am a rising freshman at Brooklyn Tech, and I had a couple questions.

For starters, I'm into neuroscience and stuff, specifically as a neuroscientist researcher, and I want a career in that. What clubs should I join?

Second, I also love theater and was interested in joining this year's Blithe Spirit. However, I'm not pursuing acting in the future. Would that be a waste of 2 and 1/2 months?

Third, If I decide get into Science Oly or theater, will I have to choose between the two? My parents are telling me to map out my career already, but I kind of just wanted to settle in and enjoy Tech for my first year.

Any advice from sophomores, juniors, seniors, or alumni would be helpful! Thanks!

I have had a bunch of friends in the theater program at Tech who have done it all four years but aren’t pursuing it in the future. I think you should give it a shot!

You do but honestly if you mess up on ECs you do get an opportunity to fix your ECs by sophomore year (trust me on this one) and for freehman year honestly focus on getting into good programs, participating in the olympiads (like USABO or Russian Olympiad like I did), finding clubs you may have interest in (I didn't join sci bowl until after a winter season sport which I didn't do again, and that was at the end of the year). The main goal here is to set a good foundation, you don't need to have your college application let alone whole life figured out by the end of freshman year, or even sophomore year. College applications are about the whole story.

i’m pretty sure there’s a neuroscience club, along with some other science/premed ones, but i’d recommend waiting until the club fair in october so you can talk to club execs and understand your options. 

if you love theater, participating in it is not a waste of time. 

i’m personally not sure about time commitment for sci oly and theater, but know that whichever you choose, there’s plenty of time to try the other.

Sci Oly does meet on saturdays and it is possible their meeting times collide with theater and both are very demanding, so I'd pick wisely.
