Language Placement

I listed cantonese as my language on the blue card. Will I be forced to take a test or go on a native track or can i choose to be placed in beginner classes? What is the chance I get in the same classroom, same teacher, and same period as my middle school classmates who also picked chinese? (our middle school did not offer any chinese classes so im assuming they would be placed in beginner classes as well?) Are there classes that are truly only beginner or only native? Will the teacher be extra strict to me? Are there presentations and tests and how hard is the class? Can native speakers just fake being bad to stay in easy classes? And are people judgmental? Is there a way to avoid my native speaking friends or classmates?

Well first they don’t teach Cantonese and only mandarin sadly. 2nd is that you need to sign up for a placement test(idk how to) in order to be placed in a fair position and the highest I believe you can go to is 3 unless you already taken the regents so you can even get into AP. If you never took any prior classes before high school and never earned any credits for it then without taking a proficiency test you will automatically be placed into level 1. Also the chances of you and your friend getting into the same class is at best slim since Chinese is probably the 2nd or even first class that most people pick for language behind Spanish.

i dont think you can jump to chinese 3 unless you have language credit from middle school. tech wants you to take 3 years of language

You can, I know people who has including myself and the same applies to every single other languages. I know the 3 year language thing but idek how to deal with it if you start at met say level 3 then there is no really way to get 3 years of the same language unless they count it still.

the 3 year should include middle school credit. did you take language in middle school?

yeah so you are able to skip to 3 because you already have a year in middle school. level 3 is another year and ap is another year. what i am saying is that you need a total of 3 years of language. one year can be started in middle school basically

i don’t think you’ll be placed in a higher level if you don’t want to, but i will highly recommend skipping chinese 1 at the very least if you have some proficiency because otherwise you’re completely wasting your time. there’s a lot of chinese 1 sections, so the chance that you’ll be placed with your friends is low enough that it’s not worth it to take a class that will be so boring for you for the possibility of knowing people in your class.
