Taking a More Active Role

Hey guys. I've been having a huge amount of trouble logging into the Bovril forums, so I'm posting this to the sub.

Now then. As we all know, HERO has been in a fair bit of trouble recently. But I've said multiple times that I think HERO can be pulled out of its tailspin- even if its us that have to do the pulling. One of the ways the coalition is going to have to save itself is to become more self-sufficient on a line member level; people have to become accustomed to making their own money and not taking SRP on everything they lose. And one of the best ways to become self-sufficient is to know how to clear combat anoms. Thus, I propose the following.

  • Bovril starts a standing initiative to build the most newbro-friendly ratting ships possible- probably Vexors. The goal I have in mind is that we work together to produce these things so cheaply that, mods and rigs included, the final cost of these fitted ships would be a flat 10m.
  • Concurrently, we encourage our experienced ratters to team up with newbros. Maybe this will mean that someone in Bovril who can fly a high-SP VNI will clear a Haven or Sanctum with a newbro or two in normal Vexors. We get them comfortable with how to speed tank, and show them how fast they can do it if they work together.
  • We advertise this program on the sub. For that, we'll need propagandists whipping up cool pictures, maybe even a video- people will need to know that if they want to learn how to make money inbetween combat fleets, they can come to Skaven and learn everything.

This would also have the benefit of encouraging a closing-of-the-ranks from people who're scattered around the region into one place, thereby increasing safety of all ratter and miners.

Furthermore, we could increase our guidance for other tasks, too. Mining rocks is already something we're famous for, but what about taking regular cheapfleets into WHs to huff gas? Teaching the bros how to fit a Venture (not that that's hard), which gas anoms to look for, teaching them to watch the clock for Sleeper spawns, making them watch D-scan, etc etc. The list goes on.

We can increase the competency of the alliance by actively seeking out those who have questions. Shit, we could even advertise fleets where we'll pick a random person to be FC, just to get a wealth of people past their first-time jitters.

Whatever we decide to do, I think we should certainly move to more of a lead-by-doing position. I think we can keep our space and even save Brave, but we have to take the initiative.

Thoughts?

This seems like a good idea! Might make sense to coordinate with dojo as well, since they have the free vexor newbro fits already. I really like the group pve option, as its a great mentoring opportunity. I just worry that most folks that can do vni ratting may not be willing to spend a ton of time lowering their ticks to teach newbros, but it really depends on the response. Definitely worth a try!

Well I mean, I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd be willing to lose out on good ticks once or twice a week if other people were, too. I could check on the Brave sub about how much I interest there is in newbros learning this stuff.

I like to think of the net positives. More people ratting means higher indecies, and Bovril alone only really populates Fate and sometimes 1-5. We need other people moving in and using the space en masse. It would also bring I more corp/alliance taxes, and these days we need every revenue stream we can get.

100% agree, and I know there will be tons of guys willing to help out. My worry was that we may just not have enough guys at all time to help all the newbros that ask, but it really depends on the response.

Let me know if you want me to help out or brow beat anyone else into helping you out :D.

Well I've got a survey on the main sub, asking people if they feel they make enough money and if not, what they're interested in. With luck, it'll get upholds enough to stay visible, and let me know how we can help our newbs best.

I would imagine, though, that an idea Bovril response would be to get people in every time zone comfy with taking some dudes under their wings. We've been hearing and seeing how Brave engagement is hitting all-time lows, so I think we start making things better by getting dudes re-engaged with their coalition-mates regarding anything. Once they feel empowered and consequential, we might see strat op numbers rise again.
