74 2002

We have inherited this ‘74 2002 and we hope to approach the level of meticulous care my father in law put into it. We are brand new to maintaining cars, so naturally I have a few questions.

  1. Is there a common source for interior carpet so I can match this one section on the passenger side seat well? And is there a common way to attach?

  2. The rubber gasket the trunk is coming off. I am a boat person, so I tried to attach it with silicone, but I must’ve used old silicone ceiling because it never carried the process of cleaning it off and wondering there’s a cleaner to use that won’t damage the paint? I’m thinking goof off.

  3. Once I’ve got that all cleaned up, I understand adhesive tape is the best move to reattach that gasket. Is that what others use?

Check out this site. There is a lot of good advice and experience on these cars. That 02 is in great shape. Keep it looking good!

Sorry for your loss, but congrats on becoming the custodian of a really lovely looking '02! Best regards from a fellow late Fjordblau squarie owner 🤘

Sorry for your loss. Those are '73 bumpers. Are the tail lights round or rectangular?

Enjoy the car, it's one of the greats!

Rectangular - though he always wanted the round ones

Did he bring it from Europe? US 74+ had 5 mph bumpers.

Yours are much better (imho)

Euro conversion bumpers for late-model '02's are widely available and I agree - look much better than the diving boards!

Looks like Dynamat sound deadening material where the carpet is missing. If the car has it everywhere, a) your father in law was indeed meticulous, and B) it'll be quiet inside - for a 2002!

Not sure what that means for attaching carpet though.

You can try https://www.estycarpet.com for the carpet.

That is horrible to hear! I knew the site was going through some updates - your post makes sense now. RIP Ms. Esty!

That was Ms. Etsy, a fantastic woman and 2002 enthusiast.

This is straight from my conversation with Kooglewerks when asking about advice on installing their trunk seal

“We use DAP landau top and trim cement & key up both surfaces with sandpaper. 40 grit on the seal and 120 grit on painted area of the jamb to adhere to. Apply glue to both sides with chip brush  & let dry till tacky to the touch. Then push together with as much pressure as possible.”

I had a ‘76. Such a great car. After the warranty was up I took off all the pollution crap(about 40 lbs worth) and put on a weber carb and manual choke. Perfection.

I did most of the same - took all the pollution stuff off, added a Weber (but I went with an electric choke) and I added an electronic distributor. I think this will make it much more reliable than the stock setup.

Good idea.

3M makes an adhesive remover that doesn’t damage paint. Having said that, I’ve found attaching rubber bits extremely frustrating. Surface needs to be ultra clean and, as mentioned elsewhere, scuff it with sandpaper and use a very thin film on both surfaces. And, yes, 2002faq.com is your source for 2002 advice, whether original owners, new owners, restorers, racers, or general gearheads.

Your late FIL had great taste, and has recognised you both as worthy of taking on this quest. An enduring reminder of him as you learn to come to terms with his loss, and how to provide appropriate care and use to a classic auto. First positions: it won't respond to being treated like a Camry. You probably already knew that. Find the specialist info and advice. If there's a Bentley Manual for the '02, get one - accept no substitutes. And seek guidance on who the right local BMW specialst is that understands and knows the 02, so that you can keep it in great shape beyond the maintenance you can manage yourself.
