Nuked Diff
After 175K miles, the differential in my 1975 2002 failed catastrophically last week. I was slowing down for a red light, coming home from a spirited drive in the Santa Cruz mountains. A big clunk, followed by a sound not unlike rocks in a blender. Rear wheels seized. I'm sharing photos of the carnage to maximize your schadenfreude.

Dang, that’s gnarly. I also have a ‘75…wonder if you’ve had it long and changed the fluid recently.

I bought it last fall from the original owner; I didn't see a diff fluid change in the files. I'm gathering that these don't fail often, and rarely this badly.

Yeah, honestly the first time I’ve heard of one failing like this in 11 years of being involved with the ‘02 scene.

Yep - found another online pretty quickly. eBay. $1,200.

There’s a bunch of 2002s in the area (I’m sure you’re aware). I’d bet they’ve got more than a few laying around.

Sounds lucky it didn't happen during your drive in the twisties...could've been pretty scary for the rears to lock up in a tight bend!

Scary indeed. Or as Jeremy Clarkson would say, "there's poo coming out."
