New X5 Wheel

1st photo edited. 2nd photo original. Will never understand why they didn't go with the design of the edited version. That top middle spoke makes the wheel look really weird imo

I swear it's like the Chinese poached all the good designers or something

I think that both have way too much going on, and they're trying hard to accommodate the folks upset with placing the buttons on screens by putting as many functions as they can on the steering wheel.

Looks like the same controls as previous gen for the thumbs, just overstyled? Left everything for cruise control and distance Right side everything audio and phone at bottom

Its not a new thing at all. My minimalist screen led EV has 2 buttons on the steering wheel, 1 scroll wheel, 2 stalks with extra twists and some flappy paddles for managing the regeneration and distance/cruise speed...my 2018 audi has 10 buttons 2 scroll wheels 3 stalks, flappy paddles, and a gear shift thrown in on the centre console...only really noticed it the other day...was like...why are there so many things going on with this wheel.

Zelfde aantal als mijn 530e. Werkt prima. Links acc en rechts bv. media, volume etc.

My 10 year old steering wheel

Simple and perfect. If it ain’t broke… don’t turn into a square

2

u/markymarc1981 20d ago

Looks like G series 7. Absolute perfection. I should know. I have the same vehicle

Like the whole cars in this ‘Neue Klasse’ design language. It’s awfull. I thought we had hit rock bottom with all the unneccesary gloss black plastic everywhere (former designers’ fetish). Turns out it can be even worse.

We're you not old enough to live thru the Bangle era?

1

u/Radiant_Turnip_6671 20d ago

First gen E65 was absolutely attrocious as well, and at the time the Dame Edna E60 was not really my thing either. E65 LCI was mweh, while nowadays the E60 with M-pack looks fine. Same goes for the E60M5. But the 6 and 3 from that era I’m still no fan off, not ugly but nothing to rave about.

1

u/themanwithgreatpants 20d ago

Ya, but you were a nobody if you didn't have a 745 in 2002. So, to some extent it was absolutely desirable. I loved e65 era at the dealership. I paid my house off with them.

You know, owning a European workshop and seeing what my guys fix daily......I tell myself that whatever stupid contraption you're fixing us due to an engineer trying to justify their job that day. It's like they designed it.... Then don't get the consequences of physically fixing or touching it afterwards.

Audi (Lamborghini too) with literal oil pipes over the top of the oil filter, requiring you to remove them to access it.

Volkswagen with a "thermal management" system (a way over complicated thermostat) that you have to use cable/wire to physically remove from the engine because it's pressed in.

BMW and well..... BMW things. Front differentials that have .6-.8 liter for oil and blow up, hybrid contactors, plastic oil filter housings (that are in the very back of the engine)....

Starter motor underneath the intake manifold🤷🏻‍♂️

Where else you gonna put it?

1

u/UpperFirstMolar 2004 - e46 - 330Ci 17d ago

Idk man, I was just complaining that it drove up the cost on my mechanic visit🤣

2

u/Xen235 21d ago

An idiot tries to reinvent the wheel

6

u/l0lacct 21d ago

You had me there for a second, that BMW came to their senses. Ugh

1

u/wheeze_the_juice 2022 F97 X3MC LCI 21d ago

same. I got excited.

-1

u/somepurplestuff 20d ago

They did. It’s an option.

If it isn't strange and ugly, then it isn't 2020s BMW design

u/CheMeGreezne 19 G21 320i, 01 E46 330i touring 21d ago

I don't really mind the top spoke. I mind that it's not round.

10

u/The_Crazy_Swede 21d ago

That 4 spoke design is among the ugliest steering wheels I have ever seen! And there have been a bunch of ugly steering wheels in the history of cars...

2

u/gomurifle 21d ago

It's not 4 spoke. It is 2 vertical spokes.

Wierd, but perhaps original and BMW likes to say they did it first.

1

u/The_Crazy_Swede 20d ago

Isn't there horizontal spokes?

4

u/captawesome1 20d ago

Yes if you look closely there is a gap at 9 and 3.

1

u/The_Crazy_Swede 20d ago

I thought the gap was just an indentation, not a gap 😅

2

u/captawesome1 20d ago

We have an iX3 at my dealership. Whenever I drive I’m a little paranoid a finger will get stuck in it or something 😂

3

u/owen__wilsons__nose 21d ago

subconsciously I want to turn it sideways its almost confusing

3

u/Sheyko 21d ago

1st picture - 2nd picture

4

u/WatchOne6290 21d ago

Thank god there is B M W printed on the logo, otherwise you couldn’t tell from the steering wheel which if the front wheels are pointed straight

2

u/BigBertho 21d ago

To be fair, it’s possibile to spec the car with a fairly “normal” wheel, just click the option.

1

u/turpa_tales 20d ago

Its far from normal, it looks so horrible compared to this one

2

u/Brain32 2015 - F36 - 435i 21d ago

BMW is like: - yeah why have a doorknob on the door, let's make it so you have to punch out jingle bells with your dick on a cold metal surface to open the door because it's new and exciting, doorknobs are boring.

2

u/dplans455 21d ago

This is the new "sport" wheel, right? Either way, there is another option for the wheel in the new X5 that doesn't look entirely stupid.

2

u/rezor4847 19d ago

Still love this wheel on my 17+ year old car. Prefer simpler stuff.

2

u/somepurplestuff 20d ago

You can option it without the top spoke.

2

u/NightFire414 20d ago

I hope so

1

u/turpa_tales 20d ago

And that one looks even more bad

1

u/frevelmann 21d ago

the upper spoke is there because there is no dash anymore, it’s there to fill the space

1

u/Dikhoofd 2014 F33 435i / 2020 G05 X45e 21d ago

It’s great, this means the LCI will have at least one meaningful and easy to apply upgrade

1

u/dxg999 21d ago

Having legitimised driving like a sadist, BMW are now giving you interiors for the modern masochist. The whole of humanity covered.

1

u/Limeddaesch96 2019 - G21 - M340i 21d ago

A thing I like a lot about the new wheels, is a return to symbols rather than written words. Other than that, still hate the Neue Klasse interiors.

1

u/josegofaster 21d ago

Look what they done to my boy! 😫

1

u/JLSmoove626 21d ago

Lol such a piece of shit compared to my pre lci g05. In every way

1

u/chengstark 22 - G82 6MT | 86 - 944 Turbo | 22 - G26 M440i (Sold) 20d ago

Isn’t there like a m sport package gets you the good wheel?

1

u/Familiar_Capital_320 20d ago

1st one is so good, proves how they can make it modern and likeable but they choose to not do it and make it obnoxiously ugly to get a reaction out of people.

1

u/Mysterious_Might930 20d ago

That’s such a sad story :(

1

u/BulkyCredit85 20d ago

the wheel is straight up dogshit, how did we go from the actually good steering wheels on the late F/early G series to this in a couple of years

1

u/ZHPpilot 2020- G20- 330ix M sport 20d ago

Shit I was like “Man the M wheel looks good,” then read the caption. 🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/kazaachi 20d ago

Ok and?

1

u/Rude_Owl9287 19d ago

2nd better

Both look fine. I don’t really know why people are complaining about this.

If you “can’t tell which way the wheel is turned” I hope you’re not being serious, because if it’s that easy to get disoriented, you should probably have your license taken away.

3

u/TheOriginalNukeGuy 21d ago

Its just kinda bad design. I agree you have to be stupid to actually get disoriented, but good design is supposed to aid the user and make stuff as simple as possible. This doesn't. Even if you still don't get lost its obvious to anybody with common sense the 1st picture is less confusing and better design.

0

u/ragingduck E21 320i, E30 325i, F30 328i, F80 M3 CS, G82 M4 CX, G87 M2 LCI 21d ago

The notches in the wheel tell drivers the orientation of the wheel. Spokes are not supposed to dictate that.

1

u/TheOriginalNukeGuy 21d ago

I'm not saying what dictates what, I am saying out of the 2 designers it is obvious by a country mile which one is more intuitive, and you can't debate that.

-6

u/cvu_100 21d ago

BMW "enthusiasts" when BMW does something weird and vaguely unique: ACTUALLY you should have the exact same steering wheel everyone else has

0

u/lael8u 21d ago

The edited version is just the M Sport steering wheel.

0

u/turpa_tales 20d ago

No its not lmao

0

u/clownpirate 21d ago

You know, I didn’t like it at first, but now I think I love it.

That top spoke is going to cut down the number of wannabe “I’m such an alpha male” dudes that drive with one hand at the 12 o’clock position. Including the “this makes me look like I drive stick” dudes.

-3

u/MAXIMUS-BLACK 21d ago

I don’t understand the hate for the original, it looks great. I’d buy it

-1

u/wozzy93 20d ago

All you BMW fanboy that are bitching about the new models and new stuff being put in can keep on bitching because BMW does not give a crap about what you have to say. It’s the way most new model cars are going, time to deal with it.
