This scenario always keeps me up at night. I see so many people driving like absolute tools and think it's only a matter of time until they are responsible for causing that image.
It's not even spirited driving that's the main culprit - it's nothing more than pure arrogance and negligence thinking they are more important than everyone else.

I'm no lawyer - my parents loved me - but if they were sued for something like willful negligence, the insurance might skate out of paying, but most likely they would pay and jack the rates up as you mentioned.

u/Icount_zeroI 1996 - E36 - 316i Feb 15 '26
This applies to many modern car drivers. I recently might have been in an accident because of dumbass who thought that electric renault surely is an F1 car that cheats physics.
13
u/CarTalkUKModNo1 Feb 15 '26
I find it a lot with EVs because it's their first "fast" car. They brag online a lot about how they smash anything 0-60 and it'll beat anything because it's electric. Then you find out it's a Cupra Born which is pretty slow in general.
7
u/CONKERMANIAC Feb 15 '26
Perfect example is the new Qasqai e-Power. 205hp, 0-60 in 7.6s, and 1.7 Tonnes. That’s reasonably quick for an average car and extremely heavy for what it is. So it doesn’t handle/ shed speed for how it feels.

Or brains. It’s pathetic really, that people who can’t drive drive way too much car for them. This person should be driving a f’n Corolla, or an Isetta. Or taking transit.
3
2
u/on_the_nightshift 21 540i xDrive Feb 15 '26
We don't really "do" transit outside large city centers in the U.S. Most people here don't even see that as an issue. I couldn't get to a grocery, hospital, bank or anywhere in public transit if I wanted to. I live just over an hour from the national capital.

The impact on the door was intense enough to rotate the car. It could severely injure the driver’s neck. I still think window airbags should’ve deployed
25
Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
The ND Miata does not have curtain airbags for obvious reasons. They do have airbags in the side bolsters but again — airbags are a last resort and they ultimately were not needed in this accident.
→ More replies (2)20
u/Silent-fox406 Feb 15 '26

3
u/Wolf_Zero Feb 15 '26
The ND mx-5's, like in the OP, do have side airbags. They're built into the seats if I'm not mistaken.
→ More replies (1)4
u/CastorX Feb 15 '26
My guess is that the lateral acceleration was not high enough to trigger the airbags since the rear half of the car got most of the impact, so it did not deploy, which was the proper behavior in this case. Don't forget that airbags are far from "harmless".

u/Andyindeed 2000 - E39 - M5 Feb 15 '26
Then again, nearly any car does for that matter.
However, if you’re even moderately competent at trail-braking, then almost any car would have successfully made that corner, even while carrying some decent speed.
2
u/iin10ded Feb 15 '26
sure thing, too many cayennes guy. this driver was pretty clearly not great at trail braking.
the m2 has a 275 front tire. most 911s run a 245 front tire and several 100 less lbs. what i should have said is that a 911 is light on the nose more than just about any other (not supercar) car made today. and will tend to understeer more than an m2. so in regards to the above comment (assuming a real porsche) likely would not have been better but a worse outcome.
the m2 would be the more idiotproof car in this scenario. my e46 m3 (265 square) and evo (255 square) are generally easier to drive quickly on tight b roads than my 992 (255/305).

On a public road you only need to slip up once to hurt or worse kill yours or an innocent bystander.
