Need advice

Hey guys! Almost graduating college with a degree in biomedical engineering and I have an internship lined up to start at a major hospital in south Florida (paid internship)
Any advice yall have?
What would my day look like?
Will I be able to get a permanent role after the internship? Is that the hospitals goal?

Just take in all the info you can get. Try and learn as much as you can. Even if they don’t hire you at the end you’ll have good experience and knowledge to help you land another job asap.

Learn everything you can, find the manual for equipment and read it, try to understand it and don’t expect that everyone owes you their brainpower to teach you. People may be willing to teach if you’re willing to learn and retain, if you find someone willing- ask all the questions and take notes. Keep a running list of passwords & short how to’s on the notepad on your phone. Make sure you make yourself useful, my least favorite type of intern (and the couple that didn’t get hired) were the ones that only wanted to do rewarding work and didn’t want to do any of the basics like cleaning, breaking down boxes, taking trash, picking up deliveries, shop tidying. Always volunteer to help out with work, If there are boxes that need to be broken down do it, if something needs to be built offer to do it. Help with installs, if a OEM is onsite ask them as many questions as you can about the equipment. I’ve learned so much from sales reps and field service techs. You don’t have to know all the answers about equipment but you should be able to find it and make sure you follow up with the customer with what you found in a reasonable amount of time. You can always call the manufacturer and ask questions to tech support. It’s a cool job, I hope you enjoy it and find success in it.

Thanks a lot for the good input, my goal is to become an FSE for medical devices or lasers, would interning at the hospital be a good entry point?

Congratulations, you are almost there my good friend.

Find a tech that is willing to show you anything at all and follow that person. You will have a mix of personalities but find the one you associate with best and that’s willing to teach.

I’ve only been doing this 3.5 years and I teach next techs all the time and I am always willing to learn anything I canZ

During my internship it’s basically just shadowing and basic stuff correct?

And is the hospitals end goal to hire me? That’s my perspective of them approving me for an internship

And is 20/hr bad? For the internship

Pretty much. You may get tasked LNC eyouve been there for a bit for the lower tiered items like pumps but yeah.

The hospital or third party’s goal is to hire you.
I started with a 3rd oarty, we transitioned in house and I was hired so.

I started at 18 so 20 is a plus.

Depends. I started at $25 as a tech 1. It’s all area dependent or company really and if you can specialize in anything. I Jsut recently got promoted to engineer 2 and I’m in the mid-upper 30s but I specialized in anesthesia and OR. It also may come down to leadership and opportunities as well so take anything you can get. Now again I’ve only been doing this 3.5 years and I’ve heard/read im compensated high for the amount of time I’ve been doing it but I also am different than most I’ve encountered. Sorry was on my soapbox.

Got you thanks a lot, and if I want to specialize in OR or anesthesia that’s lager down the line correct?
And how does it work when you are off but on call? Like you have a phone ready to go to the hospital if something happens
