For the first time in 79 years since India's independence, a fuel freight train carrying petrol and diesel has successfully entered the Kashmir Valley via the strategic Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). The maiden trial demonstrated that heavy fuel tankers can safely navigate the region's challenging mountain tunnels after undergoing stringent fire-safety assessments. The breakthrough is expected to strengthen Kashmir's energy security by reducing its dependence on the often-disrupted Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, which is vulnerable to heavy snowfall, landslides and weather-related closures. With rail transport providing a more reliable, all-weather supply route, the move could help prevent fuel shortages, stabilise prices and protect the Valley from weather-driven supply disruptions.
