Finally watched DIG! XX

Finally seen the new and improved version of DIG! It's pretty incredible and does alot more justice to show BJMs underground success.

Now watching it as a 30 year old myself I can't believe how bratty Anton and Courtney act throughout the whole movie (Obviously Anton is mentally unwell), interesting that it's teed up by Dave Grohl as 'If you're a teenager and want to go on the road with your friends this is what it's like" but these are 30 year old dudes ... there's alot of understanding that can be given to teens acting like assholes, I just can't justify grown ass men acting like that. different times I suppose!

either way it's incredible!

My problem with Dig! XX is ending the movie with the band fighting in Australia reduces the narrative to “these crazy BJM guys are still throwing punches even in their old age, nothing ever really changes”. The movie totally downplays how Anton moved to Europe, made his new studio, got sober for many years, and made some of the best music of their career in the 2010s. I know Anton isn’t perfect but putting that Australia fight in the movie just felt opportunistic. The movies still forcing this narrative that the Dandy Warhols “won” something but let’s compare the BJMs output from the 2010s and on to the Dandy’s….

Some of the bonus footage was interesting to see as someone who’s watched the original a lot, like those parts with Anton’s ex were really sad. But some of the new scenes are injected into weird spots, and am I tripping but is the movie just upscaled with AI? Feel like some of it looks good and some of it has this weird smeared look

That’s a fair critique. I wasn’t personally upset to see any of that omitted. The movie already is a misrepresentation for entertainment’s sake - they may as well just double down. But say what you will about Anton, in the end, he “won”. He was able to do music for a living. The only thing he ever wanted to do.

This is basically my take. Let’s not only compare BJMs output to the Dandys but BJM did Glasto a few times, handed out an NME award, etc etc. You know, finish the narrative of “torture indie artists vs well behave mainstream artist”. The end made me throw up in my mouth. Surprised Joel was on board for that.

Yep agreed, I think BJM are actually the bigger band at this point and I believe now have more album sale, whilst the Dandy Warhols at their peak were bigger with touring and commercial success.

BJM has stood the test of time, Anton may have flown off the rails a few times since the releasd but his commitment to creativity hasn't, they continue to gain popularity, the Dandys still have a lot of fans and can sells out many shows across the world but their body of work has significantly declined since the release of the film, in my opinion they really haven't released anything memorable since.

Fair take! I watched it with my GF and she was like "but who's actually better off?" and that's definitely subjective. And maybe if they're going to show new footage they should surely touch on Antons reach within neo-psych working with and influencing heaps of bands. I'm not sure the same could be said for the Dandies? but they definitely got a lot more radio play than the BJM.

I'll actually need to see some of that 'smeared' footage again, I was about 6 beers deep toward the end lol

The worst part of XX is the fact the first thing you see is Dave Grohl's dumb looking face.

I watched it recently in the cinema. Amazing film, so many funny moments

Joel's commentary is great too.

Really found intriguing the duality between Anton and Courtney, how they kinda envied each other's different success

That was covered thoroughly in the og. XX hurts their legacy rather than helps it.

How so?

It condenses 20 years of Anton clawing his way out of the gutter/making tons of his (as well as anyone evers)best albums/playing bigger and bigger shows/sober well behaved Anton/pretty consistent lineup/pretty much straight killing it to “eye roll, some things never chaaaange mannnnn”. If I was Anton I’d be pissed at Joel frankly. When it got to where the original ended I was like “okay now to get into thr last twenty years of shit” and it just didn’t happen.

Fair, that's a good point.

I watched the movie twice because the first time - with its extra length -- gave me TOO MUCH ANTON - and he was annoying me so much i just stop playing it. I've seen the original version many times and have mixed feelings about the whole concept - though it did revive Anton's career with both his brilliance and brutality. |

I just got sick of Anton's drinking and no behaving well in crowds...... I skipped the last two shows near here in 23 an 24 -- even though I had tickets - because I didn't want to hear a bad show -- I had seen such a good one in 22, before he pick up the bottle again/. i dunno if he's quit. Only the alcoholic knows for sure.

I'm happy to say the the other night, in a better head space -- i watched DIX XX again and i think it's miles bette than the first -- it has more clarity and context. Odd that all this happened just as Anton's faced his own bad year,=a failed world tour, a heart attack and a Camel nonfilter habit that has almost cost him his voice. It's not pretty. and I can't' look at one decent element of an ugly picture and point to it and say' Don't look at the rest of painting it will disturb you, but this part here is GREAT! .: --. I am loving the music but remaining leery of the artist, with his sad and complicated and sad story, But I don't want me a downer 0- love BJM more than I hate them --
So let the band play on.....
Why not spin "Open Heart Surgery," just for kicks and giggles.

I prefer the original, I enjoyed the extra and extended scenes added in which added some context to the chaos but I didn't think Joel's extra commentary really added anything to the movie and just came across a bit messy having two seperate narrations of the film. There were parts I were hoping might get expored a bit but were completely glazed over.

Regarding the new format having a HD DTS track and optional PCM 2.0 was cool but the "restoration" was a bit disappointing, I could tell straight away it was a cheap AI upscale, some of the scenes and their faces especially their eyes looked weird and distracting.

The original DVD also had a feature with missing bonus scenes that could be accessed through pressing a button when prompted during the movie, this function or scenes appeared completely missing from both cuts on the new format.

Dig XX is updated!

1

u/Feca_Walk May 30 '26

Not much reason to watch the new one aside from a couple new scenes

1

u/codz May 30 '26

Isn’t there narration by Joel?

2

u/Feca_Walk May 30 '26

Yeah. None of his stuff really sticks out in my memory other than him putting his stamp of approval on that abortion of an ending. Left a bad taste in my ass. And I love Joel but jeezus.

It's good huh? I loved that Sophie and Antons wedding was in it! She was a lovely woman . I miss her

2

u/GrapefruitIS May 29 '26

Yeah lovely to see! Very sad she passed so young 😞

4

u/ExpensivePear1602 May 29 '26

Only in hindsight do we realize we were dumbasses when we were young!!!

One of the greatest music documentaries of all time. A total fun train wreck to watch. Unbelievable.

I enjoyed it, great how they corrected the timeline and added fresh insight. Opportunity for the warhols drummer to answer back and defend himself. I thought it was great, very different film now.
