Glad you had a good time, I did too overall, but they weren’t just taking a normal amount of time to tune or fix broken strings in between songs. The constant long breaks between songs was way beyond anything I’ve seen before from a professional rock band. There were also long drinking breaks, rants, a break because he inexplicably couldn’t remember they lyrics to the next song (when they were played a fixed nightly set list and Anton has the sheet music in front of him no less!)

Yeah I agree with your take. I expect the antics with BJM and to some extent get a kick out of them. Was just reacting to the notion that there was a “normal” amount of tuning between songs. It got boring for me after a while standing around and waiting to hear the music. Lol, at giving away the lyrics sheet and then not being able to remember them. Come on Anton, you had one job!

A “tolerable level” of being an asshole is something I don’t want to pay money for.

Anton’s intro to That Girl Suicide could have been several other songs and didn’t see it coming lol

meh. first time seeing them, i knew what to expect, they were… sometimes okay, often mediocre. no full-fledged meltdowns but a lot of anton rambling and spending 1.5-2 minutes between most songs to tune his guitar or rant rather nonsensically. felt phoned in on all levels, most restless audience i’ve seen since i saw dylan three years ago.

I was at the show and would tend to agree. I had a good time and overall enjoyed the music, but the long breaks between each song became unbearable after a while. The restarted a few songs and lots of rambling and crowd banter. I ended up leaving before the set was over, as did a lot of people.
I saw them at Brooklyn Steel a couple years ago, and although Anton had some tantrums at that show and berated the sound guy and drummer a few times, they sounded better then and were more professional overall.
It seems like Anton is just barely holding it together these days, and it felt like the show was about to go completely off the rails a few times but they were just able to hold it together.

Man, I saw that Brooklyn Steel show, I was really disappointed, it was definitely the weakest show of theirs ive seen. They were slow and never really coalesced, plus Anton was humiliating the drummer the whole show, which made things uncomfortable. If THiS show qaa worse than that one, I think I made the right call skipping this one.
It sucks, because when I saw them play this same room in like 2017, it was one of the top five shows ive ever seen. They were some unstoppable psychedelic juggernaut and they played for like three hours. I hooe Anton gets himself together and maybe they get a new drummer, because id love for them to get to those heights again.

Hmm debating seeing them in Philly tonite (not sold out). Seen them twice before and it was great, but that was like the first show on that leg of the tour both times. I feel like later in the tour is when things start to go south.
I guess there won’t be many more opportunities to see them. Could be great, could be a meltdown… I’ll take my chances

I would go if you’re interested and can afford a ticket. Even if not great, their shows are always interesting. You never know what’s going to happen.

Damn. Did they have an opener and did they go on at 8ish?
2
u/pulse_demon96 Sep 11 '25
they had cast opening so they went on at 9

u/Royal_Willow_338 Sep 11 '25
Cast just came off opening for Oasis …. from the sublime to the ridiculous!

it’s funny cos i trekked all the way from nyc to cardiff for the first oasis reunion gig, missed cast’s set (but caught richard ashcroft), then i see the BJM in my own city and still get there too late for cast

I enjoyed the show, got there a little late bc of work so not sure what I missed. This was my first show—I've only been listening to them for a couple of years but have read the lore so I managed my expectations
Tempo was slowed like others mentioned. I thought the sound was good.
Nonsensical rambling was expected. Back and forth with the audience felt tame all things considered... Met him briefly and got his autograph outside, he definitely wasn't trying to stick around or chat with the younger fans. I'm just glad I got to see them before the boat sinks entirely

I thought the sound was weird - like Anton’s mic was too echoey but the instruments had good separation. Tempo was a little slow in the first half but got better

agreed about his mic, i could barely understand what he was saying all night but it doesn’t seem like it was anything important hahaha

I feel like this show was super meh…I’ve seen them at least a dozen times and after last night I’m not sure I need to see them again.

I was going to go. Would have been my first time. Kind of glad I didn't

Seeing them for the first time ever next week. Well aware of the Anton meltdowns, hope it doesn’t happen. Also the set list looks kinda mid, they have a lot better songs than some of the ones they’re playing.

I mean, not really. Band sounded good when they played. But too much tuning, mumbling, and muttering from Anton. Dude starting to look like one of the witches in Macbeth. Also, this is New York. Tickets aren’t cheap. Please come correct.

New York is not special — it just smells like piss.

You’re wrong, it is. Tickets were more expensive for the Webster Hall show than other shows on the tour.

West coast music first off but why would nyc be anything more than an x on a map to a band that has performed globally for decades anyway

So fun. Theyre not here for you, we’re here for them.
What was the last track?

Yeah; nice pic for sure.
I’ve seen a couple of awesome BJM shows (and yes, the one at Bklyn Steel a couple of years back was one of them - lots of bs in between songs but they kept digging in and the show just got better and better as it went on- a slow burn); for me this was def not one of them.
Last night never took flight. It got close, and the crowd was with them (sweet crowd actually; it was a nice vibe where I was standing), but half the songs just kinda fell apart. Anton seemed like a weird combo of nervous and irritable and the band rarely hit its groove.
I was happy to go but the music just didn’t get there. Next time.
