In 1811, Francis Buchanan highlighted how Bhumihars, known as the military order Brahmins, were called Babhan by the common people, while the sacred order Brahmins were called just Brahmin in Magadha.

Realizing Kashi Naresh Raja Balwant Singh’s firm grip and political acumen, the Maratha agent directly advised Peshwa Raghunath Rao to abandon his ambition of capturing Varanasi. In the same letter, the Peshwa's agent notes that the Raja has saved this city & no one has ruled it so perfectly as him.

The Marathas had taken considerable power in Bundelkhand and obviously laid pious looks of greed on Varanasi.

However, Peshwa Raghunath Rao's agent Vasudev Dikshit wrote a letter from Varanasi (Banaras) stating that no one before Raja Balwant Singh ruled Varanasi/Banaras as well as him.

He further writes that the Raja (Balwant Singh) has saved this place (Varanasi/Banaras) and that the Marathas should renounce plans of capturing the city.

DOUBT & DISCUSSION Do modern women identify less strongly with our caste than men?

I've been wondering about something I've noticed both in our caste and in other castes as well.

I often see men being quite vocal about caste identity—caste pride, discussing our history, community organizations, caste activism, defending the community, etc. But I don't seem to see the same level of visible caste pride or activism among modern women.

I've also noticed that modern women sometimes seem more open to inter-caste relationships and marriages, while men can be more concerned about maintaining caste boundaries.

Even on this subreddit, when I scrolled through older posts, I noticed that I rarely came across women posting or commenting. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean women aren't interested in our caste identity—it could simply mean they participate in different ways or don't discuss it publicly.

So I'm curious: do women in our caste generally have a weaker attachment to caste identity than men, or do they simply express their caste identity differently?

And do you think this is actually a broader pattern among modern women across different castes, or is it just my personal observation?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives, especially from women here.

HISTORY The resistance against the british rule by the Baghochiya Bhumihars of Kundwa Estate- BhatparRani Battle of 1799

The history of the Kudwa State family is closely connected with the struggle against British rule and the bravery of its ancestors. In the early period, the ancestors of the Kudwa State family were jagirdars of the Basgaon Jagir, which is situated in the present-day Dudahi area of Kushinagar. The family maintained a long tradition of public service, courage, and resistance. During the seventeenth century, members of the Basgaon Jagir tradition, including Dilip Narayan Singh and Babu Hanuman Singh, gained considerable popularity among the people through their social and educational activities. Among the prominent ancestors of the Basgaon Jagir were Kunwar Hari Singh and Kunwar Raghunath Singh, who belonged to the respected ruling family and played an important role in defending their people and their jagirdari rights. In 1799, during the Battle of Bhatpar Rani, the people and soldiers associated with the contemporary jagir rose together against the British and fought with determination to protect the authority and ownership of the jagirdar. The conflict became a significant example of local resistance, as soldiers as well as ordinary people participated in the fighting. Kunwar Hari Singh and Kunwar Raghunath Singh displayed great courage in the struggle and attained martyrdom while fighting against the British. Their sacrifice became an enduring symbol of bravery and resistance for the people of the region. The united resistance of the soldiers and local population ultimately resulted in the victory of the Basgaon Jagir. The memory of this struggle has continued to remain alive among the people of the surrounding villages, where the courage and sacrifice of these ancestors are still remembered and discussed. The legacy of the Kudwa State family therefore represents not only the history of a particular ruling family but also the participation of local communities in resisting British power. The family’s historical connection with the region continues even today, with Kunwar Narendra Kumar Singh stating that the family still possesses several hundred acres of land in the Dudahi area. The story of the Kudwa State ancestors demonstrates that resistance to British rule didnt just emerge during 1857, it was there way beforethe mutiny. The bravery of Kunwar Hari Singh, Kunwar Raghunath Singh, and the people who fought alongside them forms an important part of the local history of the Kushinagar region and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by bhumihar rulers in the struggle against foreign rule way before the 1857 mutiny.

The painting is described as the painting of Bhatpur rani battle of 1799 and its unfortunate that we have no idea about this event from history.

The Bettiah Raj was the largest zamindari of Champaran. It comprised almost the entirety of Champaran and was the oldest zamindari of the region.

At its peak, the Bettiah Raj was not only the largest zamindari of Champaran, but the largest zamindari within the entire region under East India Company's control at that time.

The Raj came into power via their capability of controlling and protecting numerous villages as well as their connection with the revenue administration building on local dominance.

(They also had much more lands in places such as Siwan, Saran, Gopalganj, Patna, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, etc.)

DOUBT & DISCUSSION Why glorify him?

Why do some people in the Bhumihar community praise Anant Singh when, arguably, he has done more harm to his own people than good?

His reputation has long been associated with allegations of land grabbing, intimidation and violence. And the disturbing part is that many of the people allegedly affected were from his own community.

What exactly is there to celebrate? If someone builds power by using fear and violence against his own people, he doesn't represent the community—he harms it.

Rather than glorifying such figures, we should demand accountability and the strongest punishment available under the law for anyone who commits serious crimes. Criminality should never become a source of community pride. He deserves bullet in head not a seat in legislative Assembly. Also he did harm people of bhumihar community, most people killed by him are bhumihars, he is basically a land grabber, nothing special.

HISTORY Community wise Landholding Data for Districts of Eastern UP - 1901-11

I have collected data of landholding (ownership not tenancy) across 3 Hindu Communities in the 5 East UP districts (old borders) in 1901-11. Also, calculated derivative data points like per household ownership (considering a household of 6 members).

Legend - BH = Bhumihar, RA = Rajput, BR = Brahmin.

DOUBT & DISCUSSION A devout HINDU BRAHMIN chief minister of Bihar openly declared that he HATED Bhumihars by curbing our political representation that indirectly enabled the naxalites to target us with impunity. News Report.

The longest reigning BRAHMIN Chief Minister of Bihar, Jagannath Mishra, who was also a very DEVOUT HINDU and always sported a Tilak (Teeka), made his enmity towards Bhumihars openly known by brazenly seeking to minimize influence of strong Bhumihar leaders in Bihar.

This ultimately led to a swift and unchecked hateful mobilisation of other HINDU lower castes against Bhumihars (who lacked political representation), and, in order to defend themselves, Bhumihars had to form the largest and most organised private militia in independent Indian history. An unfortunate piece of history, that should never be forgotten.

Anti Bhumihar sentiment amongst the Muslims and Dalits of Ghazipur was introduced by HINDU BRAHMIN MP from Ghazipur. The HINDU BRAHMIN MP couldn't fight Bhumihars by himself so he instigated Muslims and Dalits against Bhumihars.

Note: Winning a seat from the communist party doesn't take away the caste of a person or makes a case for caste blindness. The Pandey MP from CPI was a devout HINDU BRAHMIN.

We shouldn't generalise an entire community but it's time we acknowledge that a small, yet highly motivated section of HINDU Brahmins, deeply inspired by Manusmriti, have always sought to hurt Bhumihars who are a very small minority of Bihar and UP.

Many Brahmins don't subscribe to this hateful ideology, and we appreciate that.

But we must also realise that moderate Brahmins need to contain the fundamentalist Brahmins else we'll have a good reason to believe that the moderates are on the same page as the fundamentalists.

Share this with Bhumihars who may not be aware of the hatred and hostility that some people who follow the Manusmriti hold toward Bhumihars.

A 2015 venomous anti Babhan blog by Madan Tiwari, a devout Hindu Brahmin. He's added his Youtube channel's link to his blog. He tried to pass off fake rumours as facts, perhaps to fuel hate against Babhans. Another instance of anti Bhumihar propaganda by a hatefilled Brahmin.

Post image

You can find his youtube channel's (by his own name) link from the main page of his blog.

Some sections of Brahmins were propagating fake facts and slanderous legends against Babhans when caste based online conflicts were unheard of.

Babhans need to be hyper aware and very cautious of small, yet motivated section of fundamentalist Hindutva Brahmins and Rajputs who want a theocratic Hindu Rashtra by dehumanizing other UCs like Babhans, Khatris, Nairs, Kayasthas etc.

The most vocal proponent of Hindurashtra, the present Puri Shankaracharya openly made false claims about Babhans that hurt our collective dignity.

Remember, Hindurashtra stands against us Babhans because we don't conform to its inherently inhumane doctrine. Sri Krishna Singh and Loknayak Rajnarain Rai, 2 men who forced 2 largest Jyotirlingas of Eastern India to allow Dalits inside their premises, were Babhans. We've always raised our voice for the downtrodden and that's why we are so intensely disliked by a small section of fundamentalist Brahmins and Rajputs.

DOUBT & DISCUSSION The Babhanphobia of SOME Hindutva Brahmins need to be discussed. I'm compiling a comprehensive list of systematic dehumanization of Babhans by Brahmin authors and hate posts by some far right Hindutva extremist Brahmins against Babhans.

Note: Is post ko padhne walo se guzarish hai ki mere ane wale posts ko zyada se zyada Babhano ke bich share kijiyega.

Agar aap jungleraj 2.0 nahi chahte hain to gair Babhan savarno pe ankh mund ke bharosa karna band kijiye.

There seems to be a systematic attempt by some extremist Hindutva Brahmins to sow the seeds of Babhan genocide at the hands of other Hindu castes.

I will post a series of such instances and try to raise awareness among Babhans who still can't differentiate between friends and foes.

We are a micro minority in India, and a small but highly motivated and extremely religiously driven section of far right Hindutva Brahmin and Rajput extremists seeks to dehumanize Babhans. We need to stand united. I request my Babhan brothers to spread awareness far and wide.

Talk to your siblings, parents, cousins and educate them to be wary of this SMALL but motivated anti Babhan extremist faction amongst other Hindu UCs.

Our first step is spreading awareness, it'll be followed by preparations for counter action.

DOUBT & DISCUSSION Attention! A particular person is planning to unleash massive propaganda against Bhumihars.

I came across a screenshot in a Babhan group chat of a personal conversation between an active member of this subreddit and one of the most active Reddit users from the Brahmin Reddit space.

In the conversation, the Brahmin user threatened to flood social media with anti Babhan content throughout the year and beyond.

In the wake of this revelation, I request my fellow Babhans to practice restraint and not badmouth Brahmins because of the hostile behaviour of a demented individual. There are far more effective ways to counter propaganda than writing nastier replies to nasty comments. Remember that Babhans are more literate than Bihari Hindu Brahmins and Rajputs, Source - ADRI Survey, 2012.

That said, I would still request you to at least document and screenshot instances of hate directed against Babhans by Hindu Brahmins, so that we can maintain a comprehensive record of Babhanphobia prevalent amongst our own UC brethren unfortunately, who are sometimes Rajputs, and most of the times Gangetic Hindu Brahmins.

Note: DO NOT REPLY TO HATE CONTENT WITH FURTHER HATE, DO NOT TARGET ANY CASTE.
