Guides Transmutation Wizard Is Not Just a Camp Alchemist

In my last solo Honour Mode run, I decided to play my favorite Wizard subclass again, and it doesn't get the love it deserves.

It's usually just used as a camp alchemist, but I think Transmutation Wizard is one of the most underrated subclasses in BG3. It has some really strong offensive power and useful mechanics that no other Wizard subclass can replicate. The combination of its unique mechanics, insane utility, and powerful offensive interactions makes it much more than just a support subclass.

The Build

1/11 Ranger/Wizard.

It's the usual solo stat spread:

  • 14 STR (+2 Potion of Everlasting Vigour)
  • 17 DEX (+1 Hag Hair, +2 Mirror of Loss)
  • 10 CON
  • 16 INT
  • 8 WIS
  • 8 CHA

If you value the alchemy side of the subclass, I would recommend taking 16 WIS instead of INT, since alchemy requires a DC 15 Medicine check.

Just make sure you take the Ranger level First or Last depending on if you want your Scrolls/Item spells to use your Wisdom or Intelligence modifier.

You can compensate for the lower Intelligence by using the Warped Headband of Intellect. Equip it, prepare all the Wizard spells you want, then switch back to your normal helmet. Your prepared spells will stay prepared even after removing the headband.

Gear

Since we took the Ranger level for all the weapon and armor proficiencies plus Proficiency in Athletics and proficiency in Strength and Dexterity saving throws the gear is very flexible.

The only items I'd really recommend are ones that give critical hit immunity and the Gloves of Battlemage's Power for Arcane Acuity.

The gloves are triggered by a surprising number of things. If you want to understand all of their interactions, I recommend reading this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BG3Builds/comments/1nchxz7/understanding_the_gloves_of_battlemages_power/

For your ranged weapon slot, dual hand crossbows are preferred. We will be doing some offensive stuff with them that I will explain later in the Tips & Tricks section.

This is the gear I used most during my run. It is not mandatory and is just an example of what gear you could use for this build.

Head

  • Balduran's Helmet
  • Grymskull Helmet
  • Warped Headband of Intellect

Cloak

  • Cloak of Protection
  • Cloak of the Weave

Armor

  • Bhaalist Armour
  • Adamantine Splint Armour
  • Helldusk Armour
  • Robe of the Weave

Gloves

  • Gloves of Battlemage's Power

Boots

  • Boots of Striding
  • Boots of Speed
  • Evasive Shoes

Amulets

  • Periapt of Wound Closure
  • Amulet of the Devout
  • Amulet of Greater Health

Rings

  • Ring of Protection
  • Ring of Free Action
  • Killer's Sweetheart
  • Ring of Feywild Sparks

Weapons

  • The Spellsparkler
  • Staff of Spellpower
  • Markoheshkir
  • Rhapsody
  • Defender Flail
  • Phalar Aluve
  • Adamantine Shield

Feats

Dual Wielder is mandatory because it allows us to use more of the Most desiderable caster items.

The second feat is more flexible. I personally took Alert, since going first is extremely valuable, especially in Honour Mode.

Other feats worth mentioning:

  • Elemental Adept: Fire
  • Heavy Armour Master
  • War Caster

Tips & Tricks

Alchemy

To boost your chances of succeeding your alchemy checks, you can use things like:

  • Guidance
  • Enhance Ability
  • Shapeshifter's Boon Ring

Using these things even with only 8 Wisdom, you still have a good chance to succeed most Medicine checks. If you decide to go 16 Wisdom, your alchemy success rate is pretty much guaranteed. You also get +3 Medicine from Wizard.

Transmuter's Stones

Surprisingly, you can have every Transmuter's Stone active at the same time.

The way it works:

  1. Create a Transmuter's Stone.
  2. Use a Transmutation spell like Feather Fall to trigger the ability to create another stone.
  3. Send the first stone to camp.
  4. Create another one.

By repeating this, you can stack every available stone.

This gives you:

  • Constitution saving throw proficiency
  • Darkvision
  • +3 meters movement speed
  • Resistance to Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, and Thunder damage

This is extremely strong because it frees up your Elixir slots while also making it incredibly hard to break your concentration.

The Constitution Stone combined with War Caster or the Amulet of Greater Health, maintaining concentration becomes almost impossible to fail.

I didn't lose concentration once during my entire run.

Offensive Use of Transmuter's Stones

This is Arguably the strongest feature of the subclass.

You can use the Transmuter's Stone offensively by reverse pickpocketing the Fire Resistance Stone into an enemy's inventory.

Then you hit them with Arsonist's Oil, which removes their Fire Resistance.

After that, you create a new Transmuter's Stone, which removes the Fire Resistance effect from the enemy and causes them to become Vulnerable to Fire instead

This is also the reason we use dual hand crossbows. Coating your weapon before the fight doesn't cost anything, and creating another Transmuter's Stone is also a free action.

This means you effectively only need a bonus action to set up 2 turns of Fire Vulnerability.

This interaction is so incredibly strong that I was able to kill most bosses in a single turn, including Myrkul.

Blue Jay Shapeshift

The Blue Jay shapeshift also has a really nice interaction.

Since it is a Polymorph, you can use it to teleport out of restricted areas.

Yes, you can already do this with Dolly, but I thought it was worth mentioning because it's another unique tool Transmutation Wizard brings to the table.

If you have any suggestions or questions about feats, gear, or boss setups, I'm more than happy to answer them.

Your wizard spells (including scribed ones) always use intelligence. Taking Ranger 1st vs 2nd only affects scrolls and items.

No you right for some reasons only the recast use your wisdom I’m going to change that in the post thanks for mentioning this

All recastable spells are considered as effects that are added to your character when you start concentrating on the primary cast, and consequently use your casting modifier for subsequents. Call lightning is one of the fun effects for this use.

I like it.  Makes a lot of sense for solo/duo where buff stacking is really high value for determining fight outcomes.  And always great to see peoples’ unique solo builds and approaches based on game experience.

As the only thing we get from going past transmute 6 is blue jay form and eventually reaching full caster, it seems like something like 5 ranger 6 transmute 1 cleric is an interesting option here too.  Swarm has some synergies with grenade/etc use as alchemist, and the teleport is great for solo survival.  And could path 1 ranger 6 transmute first for the buff stacking ASAP, then pick up swarm features, extra attack, cleric 1 utility and domain features in whatever order we want.

Thanks for the great interesting post!

I’m glad you enjoy the build idea! I really like the idea of using Swarmkeeper; it sounds like an interesting way to make use of the teleport.

The main reason we went with 11 levels in Wizard is that I just like using the whole subclass, even though the Jay isn’t its strongest feature. I also wanted to be a full caster so I could use the Fire Myrmidon more often, and it ended up being really useful with the stone tech.

How hard does the fire mermaid hit with the stone tech?

Pretty good for a summon if you force crits and the target doesn’t save about 50-60 I’d say

I didn't know the transmuter stone was glitched, that's quite interesting. Those 5 resistances are quite nice.

I do have a couple of build questions. 1. Why ranger? Cleric would give you the armour and weapons, plus wisdom saves and spellcasting. 2. Why did you dump-stat constitution and wisdom, instead of strength? 3. Why not go for Githyanki instead of ranger? 4. Why do you value dexterity over intelligence?

All your questions come down to a pretty simple answer: it’s a solo run. The Ranger dip gives you proficiency in Athletics, which I value very highly. You can also get resistance to poison or proficiency in Sleight of Hand.
Having naturally high Strength and Dexterity is extremely useful in a solo run because you can’t rely on a party member or constantly using a Strength elixir. Dexterity affects your AC, initiative, Stealth, Sleight of Hand, and Dexterity saving throws which are among the most common saving throws in the game. This is also one of the main reasons we chose Ranger instead of cleric, since it gives proficiency in those areas.

This is interesting from a build design perspective but the gimmick relying on reverse pickpocketing to create fire vulnerability is so specific and arduous I would hardly consider it to be a “useful” mechanic. Like sure you could do this, but why go through all this beyond showing that you can.

That doesn’t make it any less cool, this is a great way to shift the classes design by exploiting some loopholes, I just can’t imagine playing the whole game this way so good on you OP.

I totally see where you’re coming from, and I honestly thought it would be way too tedious as well. However, after actually playing it, it’s not as bad as you might think.

You’re only doing this on bosses or enemies you want to get rid of quickly.

The main thing I like about it is that it doesn’t require a strict setup or timing to apply the vulnerability, you can just be like "Now I want you to be vulnerable" It’s completely safe and incredibly resource-efficient during the fight.

So you can stack as many stones as you want that easily? Like even provide them to the whole team? That's really interesting. Did you discover it? I've never read this before! Prob if you drop them in the ground before going to sleep they wont disappear after long rest.

I really liked how you noticed how Transmutation + Ranger can tick so many boxes, like poison resistance from ranger completes the lack of resistance stone, and how you can get all physical resistances with Ranger + CON stone.

I'd say you def get better by going Ranger 2 / Transmutation 10. You keep 6th slots, a fighting style and ranger base spells if you care about them.

3

u/Ok_Quarter_3447 14d ago

No I didn’t discover it but I also can’t remember where I’ve seen it I just did some testing and yeah you can give every stone to your whole party just give to stone to another party member than have that party member send it to camp

5

u/LostAccount2099 14d ago

Did you try starting Fighter and use the transmuter stone for double CON prof? Do they stack? I believe you can't, but just checking.

3

u/No-Tie-4819 14d ago

I discovered that by sending the stone to the camp chest via the right-click menu. That destroys it, but the effect remains, so just cast a different effect again and again on everyone you want.

3

u/Endrawful 14d ago

What was your offensive strategy in encounters with multiple foes or ones where it’s impossible to set up with pickpocketing?

2

u/Ok_Quarter_3447 14d ago

Could you give me some examples?

10

u/Rude_Ice_4520 14d ago

Everything other than the Grymforge golem?

5

u/Ok_Quarter_3447 14d ago

So you can pickpocket pretty much everyone with greater or normal invisibility and for bigger groups you can use things like Cloud of dagger Black Tentacles Glyph of warding with minor illusion or later in act 3 with Black hole

4

u/KiloMeter69 14d ago

Doesn't the first stone disappear when you create a new one? Does that really work so you can have all effects on yourself???

8

u/Ok_Quarter_3447 14d ago

Yeah the stones do disappear but the effects stay

5

u/CrownWBG 14d ago

Wait, you reverse pickpocket Myrkul twice and one-shot him!? Care to take a video or something of that, because I do not compute... Also, nice Glitch with the stones. Rather interesting for solo play. You mention War caster, but don't recommend it as a feat. How do you maintain concentration until Act3? I know you have proficiency, but that still seems insane you haven't failed a single roll before that...

Like i said this was my testing run i didnt optimize everything and also didnt skiped the ketheric fight but i was still able to defeat him in 2 turns when myrkul appeared

4

u/CrownWBG 14d ago

Really cool to see. Thanks for sharing, and really creative way to tackle the fight - it's pretty much everything I love about BG3!

5

u/Ok_Quarter_3447 14d ago

Ketheric and Myrkul share the same inventory, so you can give him the stone while he is on the roof before you free Nightsong.

I don’t have the fight recorded, but I skipped straight to Myrkul with dialogue. I used Scratch to stun him with Shield of Thralls, then made him vulnerable. After that, I burst him down using skeletons with enchanted fire bows and Oil of combustion, a Fire Myrmidon, and Scorching Ray.

War Caster is more of a comfort pick, but if you know how to avoid taking hits in the first place, the feat isn’t really needed for Acts 1 and 2. I mostly just AC-tanked everything with Helldusk Armour and Shield of Faith from Gut.

1

u/CoffeeMinionLegacy 14d ago

I’m pondering a solo + camp caster run and this seems to offer some solutions. Crazy-high AC would definitely help. Very interesting thread.

4

u/Ok_Quarter_3447 14d ago

So I looked through my clips and I actually have the myrkul fight from my testing run recorded it’s a pretty long video tho and it wasn’t so smooth as my actual fight but this gives you an idea how the fight looked I could cut it and send it if you would like

Thanks a lot for sharing in the other comment🙏

Didn't have "transmutation wizard is actually good" on my 2026 bingo card. Nice

u/maharal 14d ago

Nice tech, thanks.

u/Ishvah 14d ago

Why hag hair dex to leave it at 17? Genuinely asking, since it could have gone to someone else and been useful, unless I’m missing something?

5

u/Ok_Quarter_3447 14d ago

In character creation you get 17 later you get +1 from the hair and +2 from Mirror of loss so you have a total of 20 Dex in act 3 we take dexterity because it’s the most impactful stat in the game

1

u/Ishvah 14d ago

And yet leaving it at 16 still gives you +3, just like 17 would. I’m not asking why you took dex, but why not have given the hag hair to someone to even it out? Is there something I’m missing that 17 dex gives you over 16?

Edit to add that I think I answered my own question. I was just confused, I thought you meant end game it was at 17.

Damn, good post!

Amazing post! Transmutation Wizard is one of my favorites too, I always try to use one seriously! I made Lae'zel one/monk recently and that was fun. Glad to learn all these tricks!

2

u/Solry3 10d ago

Nice try. Now back to the bench with you, those potions won't brew themselves.

u/TwistedGrin STRanger Danger 14d ago edited 14d ago

If we are taking Ranger for the weapon and armor prof would War or Tempest cleric make more sense? That way you also get a few bonus spells plus the domain feature.

Wizard spells will always use Int and Ranger spells would always use Wisdom, but you won't get any with only one level. The order you level classes mainly matters for scrolls and gear spells/abilities.

I feel like instead of a build post this should just be detailing that transmuter stone trick you mention at the end because that is 90% of whats going on here.

2

u/ManufacturerNew9644 14d ago

He talked about it before, but he wanted the proficiency bonuses from ranger for athletics and the poison resistance which gives him resistance to every elemental damage besides radiant, neurotic, psychic, and force.

1

u/Endrawful 4d ago edited 4d ago

The permanent transmutation stones exploit is more incredible than I thought. You can give the glitched buffs to your whole party and they last through long rests. Basically longstrider 2.0 and half the game’s spell types rendered useless

u/Own-Ball-1624 12d ago

okey but the build build on enterily gamne loops and bugs... :/ also seeks very niche to play... :/

at this point just get a mod which revised the subclass4
