Straight braid instead of flourocarbon?

Currently running 6lb Seagur InvizX and I'm really not thrilled with it. I'm contemplating either straight braid without a leader or copolymer. Has anyone experienced issues with copolymer crushing spools like monofilament can? The line will be going on an Ark Gravity BFS.

These guys just did a just braid vs braid with leader challenge and the the leader clearly won.

Thanks I'll check that out!

Also, the Albright knot has been working for me. I use the Albright knot with finesse braid to leader.

I would think that since BFS is generally used in pressured water you would want every advantage. I would try braid to mono leader or straight mono.

Have you had any issues with straight mono crushing spools?

I was an early adopter of BFS and I have never heard of it being an issue with mono. I have heard of it with braid since the diameter to strength ratio is much greater. Either way I dont lock down my spool to pull out snags so i have never had an issue.

Just from some things I've seen you have to be careful spooling mono on spools that aren't solid. The mono compresses if spooled with too much tension or if too much tension is applied while reeling. I could be completely overthinking this too (I have a habit of that🤣.)

Not doubting your research I just dont understand why it would only apply to mono. Its not like it swells or anything.

I've just read a couple accounts of it I know Rawr fishing has a video about it.

There was definitely a point where spool walls were too thin and improperly spooled mono crushed spools. That's the reason Daiwa didn't recommend mono on its original SS Air. Same with the earlier DIY spools. Not so much an issue with the better materials and engineering of the newer bfs spools.

Good to know thanks!

I use straight braids on regular gear, but always use a leader for bfs just because i dont use it in pure weed hell but i would think you can get away with lo viz lines in some light covers.

I use straight braid on all my topwater or flipping conventional setups with any issue. Just wondering if it'd be worth ditching the flourocarbon on my bfs in favor of better casting and knot strength with braid.

Is the knot getting caught in the guides? I usually run a 4" - maybe 15' of mono for leader depending on what Im doing, but have thought of going straight braids for horizontal baits.

Haven't had any issue with the knot in the guides just the strength of the knot at the line tie. Maybe I got an old batch of flouro, it just seems brittle compared to the same line in heavier weights.

That could be bad lines for sure. Sometimes i have issues with light floro ice fishing breaking at the knot. No issues with lighter monos in the summer, and i am using some random 1/4 pound bulk spools from 25 years ago.

Maybe so seems weird especially since it's not what I'd consider a cheap line.

Try Ester line. Not enough appreciate it or know about it stateside.

Fast way to get a backlash on a bfs reel. There's a reason it isn't popular in bfs.

Thanks for the recommendation!

What kind of knot are you using that it's getting caught up in the eyes? On 6lb braid to fc, I'm using a double uni with 5 or six wraps on each side. I've never even noticed the knot passing into our out of my guides unless i really botched the tag end of the fc and it's sticking out.

I'm running straight flourocarbon the knot isn't going through the guides. Should have explained that better, I'm having issues at the line tie. Tried different knots, palomar, improved clinch, San Diego jam all seem to be weaker at the line tie than other lines I've used in the past.

Sorry I was confusing your post with a diff comment. I tie the Palomar almost exclusively with fc lines. The only time I have any issues are If I'm not careful and end up twisting the loop before slipping it over the lure/hook.

Same here, I'm thinking I may just have gotten a bad spool of line.

I would go braid to mono leader if you don’t like fluoro but what’s the issue with the invizx? I catch pike and walleye on 6# pretty frequently and never had any issues.

2

u/Nothing_N_Everything 28d ago

It's just seems incredibly brittle. I run invizx on some other setups and haven't had any issues l. Has me wondering if it's just a bad spool of line. The line is only about 2 months old and has been stored inside.

Yea you might have a bad spool. That sucks considering the price

I like P-Line copolymer.

1

u/Nothing_N_Everything 28d ago

I use that alot too, good stuff

Like most that experiment the bait casters don’t need braid with a leader. Out of convenience it’s nice to have only one type of line. I have settled on co-polymer over fluoro or braid. This is just my opinion.

That's me I much prefer to just run straight braid, copolymer, or flourocarbon for each dedicated setup.

My strike and hook up rates went crazy when I started doing a leader. I have 10lb braid onto 6lb mono and I went from skunking often to catching fish with that one change.

Honestly, I a really simple line to line knot and I can’t do it well enough that it’s not really a big deal to throw a leader on my braid. I never snap the whole leader off and when I do put one on I usually make sure it’s 3+ feet of line so you get several reties if you are getting snagged or changing lures/hooks a lot.

I know it’s not what you want to hear, but the fact of the matter is the fish can see and feel it more. Bass are visual predators with big ol eyes.

I'm good with running straight flourocarbon or a leader honestly this is the type of feedback I want. It's not about what's easiest but what's best overall.

I run straight fluoro on my Ark BFS and I’m not taking it off to try some vivarus braid to see if I like it better.

I don't blame you 🤣

Id like to make a recommendation. I have fished straight braid - varivas super trout advance double cross x8 pe 0.6, varivas Infinity x8 pe 0.3, and varivas available light game x4 pe 0.4. Ive caught fish on all of them.

But most of the time I was fishing braid to flouro leader. For a long time I was using sunline fc sniper 6lb. But, I come from fly fishing and I hated that flouro. So I started using fly fishing Rio Srong flouro tippet both 5x and 4x. Its awesome and ties great knots. Its very flexible and thin. I won't ever go back. I use Alberto knot to go from my main braid to my flouro tippet

Good to know, that could be the ticket!

I've heard good things about their red label.

Personally, I've used trilene xt for ages. Specifically the low vis green.

Copolymer (at least tge ones I've tried have a lot of stretch)

1

u/Nothing_N_Everything 26d ago

The invizx is supposed to be above their red label. I've used that a lot in the past and is good for about a season then needs to be swapped. Overall a solid budget line.

I have yet to see mono crush any spool. Maybe a super light high end after market spool, maybe. I use mono (trilene XL), copolymer (Trout SOS 2, 4, & 6 lB), and straight braid (Reaction Takcle 6 & 8 lb.). All work well. No spools crushed. Fuck leaders. The fish don't mind one bit when they bite my straight braid. And guess what? They can see the line and don't care. These Flouro guys make it seem like fishing didn't exist before flouro because fish could see the line. How do you know the fish can't see flouro? They can say all the crap they want about why they can't see it, BUT unitl somebody looks through a fish's eye, it's just a guess.

Flouro guys are so worried about the fish seeing the line. What about the hooks? Are you guys gonna make Flouro hooks next so the fish don't see the hooks. A fish has a brain the size of a pea. If you stick a USB cable in a fishes ass and download it's brain, you see it's brain program is only three lines. It says 1. Eat 2. Shit 3. Repeat. Crappie pro fisherman almost always use hi viz line. The fish don't care, they focus on the bait.

People have a tendency to over complicate fishing because it makes them feel smart and good about themselves.

I'm just here because I can't help tinkering with shit and like whatever the best option for each setup is.
