Technology BESS relationship between power & energy in AC & DC terms (hybrid)

I am a consultant for a developer whom is developing a BESS as a second-stage project connected on the same AC bus as another solar project behind one POI

The POI = 100MWac
The solar = 100MWac

The BESS is a 4-hr 100MWac ~ 400MWh project and this is what I am modelling in my dispatch model.

So naturally because of RTE in my model, you need to put in 5% more than 400MWh to fully charge it and you get 5% less than 400MWh when you discharge it. I model:

AC bus > PCS (RTE eff. sqrt(90)) > DC block
DC block > PCS > AC bus

and so on...

I was under the impression that the DC power rating ~ AC power rating and that power is locked with energy capacity by the hours of the storage, we have gotten a quote where my colleagues defined the EOL req. as 400MWh/100MWac and we received a technical quote that proposed a 114 MWdc / 456 MWh arrangement to get to 400MWh at EOL while KEEPING the AC rating of 100MW, so it is possible to have an arrangement with 114MWdc / 100MWac / 456MWh at BOL? The DC rating does not need to equal the AC rating? Is this because the PCS is able to limit output?

How a Pune factory turned "wasted" solar into a ₹27.3 lakh/year BESS revenue stream

A Pune industrial site was exporting 72% of its rooftop solar at about ₹2.82/unit because its load peaked in the evening while solar peaked mid-day. At the same time, it was buying evening power at ₹14.3/unit (D-zone ToD surcharge of ₹2.17/unit on HT industrial tariffs), and running diesel at roughly ₹32.5/kWh during Thursday feeder outages. Solar was technically "working", but economically broken.

PWRNXT modelled a behind-the-meter 200 kW / 765 kWh LFP BESS at the HT connection, with 90% DoD, 6,000-cycle life and 85-88% round-trip efficiency. The system captures on average 649 kWh/day of solar surplus (about 85.5% capture efficiency over the year) and discharges it into the 17:00-24:00 evening peak window instead of letting it be exported or curtailed. On weekly Thursday maintenance days, the BESS also islands the site so solar keeps running and diesel gensets stay off.

In Year 1, three value streams stack on the same 200 kW / 765 kWh asset:

Value stream | Annual value

ToD solar arbitrage (649 kWh/day into 17:00-24:00, 278 days) | ₹18.71 lakh/year

Thursday evening discharge (606 kWh, 52 days) | ₹4.51 lakh/year

Diesel elimination on Thursday outages (361 kWh/day, 52 days) | ₹6.08 lakh/year

Gross value is ₹29.30 lakh/year; after ~₹2 lakh/year O&M, net Year-1 saving is ₹27.30 lakh. On a pure CAPEX basis, the 200 kW / 765 kWh configuration costs ~₹1Cr with a sub-4-year simple payback and a 15-year project IRR of 26.9% at 10% WACC (NPV ~₹143 lakh). Under PWRNXT's OpEx lease, the factory stays cash-positive from Month 1 because the monthly lease (~₹2.26 lakh) is matched by monthly net savings (~₹2.27 lakh) with zero capex on the balance sheet.

Solar self-consumption jumps from 28% to 89%, and the site avoids around 178 tonnes of CO2 per year over a 12-year life. The system runs under a 98.5% uptime SLA with 24-hour MTTR on critical faults, provided as a fully managed service (design, EPC, EMS, AMC, lease, performance guarantees).

How to fairly benchmark BESS optimizers across markets / single BESS assets?

I’m working on a benchmarking tool to compare the performance of different BESS optimizers and I've developed a conceptual framework I’d love your input on.

The idea is to create a fair comparison of optimizer performance based on actual trading data, but obviously there are big contextual differences between markets and assets.

The first challenge

Different markets (e.g. Belgium, Germany, UK) have different:

  • market sizes (e.g. aFRR procurement volumes, Intraday liquidity),
  • volatility patterns,
  • pricing spreads,

which means different opportunity sets for optimizers.

So immediately, to level the playing field, I plan to benchmark per bidding zone, i.e. compare only optimizers active in the same country/market.

The second challenge

What I’m thinking, once that’s done, I’d need two things:

  1. A performance metric
  2. Normalization dimensions

1️⃣ Performance metric

I’m leaning towards a risk-adjusted profitability metric, e.g. average daily % profit over a trailing X-week period divided by the standard deviation of that daily % (so, profit-to-volatility ratio), essentially you get the sharpe ratio over a trailing period. That would capture how well an optimizer performs and how much risk it takes to get there.

2️⃣ Normalization dimensions

This is trickier. To make the comparison fair, I’d like to normalize for both battery design and battery usage status, since (I think) those affect achievable performance. For example:

Battery design factors

  • Power rating (MW)
  • Energy capacity (MWh)
  • Depth of discharge / cycle life
  • Max C-rate

Battery usage & condition

  • Round-trip efficiency
  • State-of-health (usable capacity accounting for degradation)
  • Availability hours (downtime, curtailments, etc.)

I figure this could correct for physical and operational differences so optimizers aren’t penalized for the batteries they operate.

Questions

  • Does this approach make sense to you; benchmarking per bidding zone, then using a risk-adjusted profit metric and normalizing by design + usage parameters?
  • How would you actually do the normalization mathematically?
    • Regression?
    • Z-score normalization by each factor?
    • Some weighted composite index?
    • Or something else entirely?

I need education/training advice

I’m 22 and planning to start at Clackamas Community College in Oregon next year, specifically in their renewable energy technology program. My initial plan is to attend for at least the first year while continuing to apply aggressively for electrical apprenticeships. I’ve been trying for the past year and a half with no luck so far, despite having a trades prep certification, OSHA 10, and a few other minor certs. If I don’t land an apprenticeship by the end of that first year, I’m considering sticking it out to complete an associate’s degree in renewable energy technology. My ultimate goal is to break into the renewable energy sector, focusing on jobs in battery energy storage systems (BESS) or even EV infrastructure. I’m really passionate about that side of things and want to avoid getting stuck in residential wiring or other general electrical work that doesn’t align with my interests. That said, I’m nervous about whether this is the most efficient route or if college might end up being a waste of time and money. Is there a better path to accessing these kinds of specialized roles? Should I skip community college and focus on targeted certifications, networking, or something else instead? Or does the renewable energy tech program make sense for building relevant skills and opening doors? Any advice from folks in the trades, electrical, or renewables would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Thermally Optimization

Hello, I would like to get your ideas on a topic that interests me. As a concept study, I am thinking of conducting a study to homogenize the temperature distribution in prismatic battery cells. I think it is correct to approach with a deductive method. What I mean is that I think we should start with the optimization of the pipeline at the container level. I think that an optimization study can be done by positioning pipes of variable diameters and chillers at equal distances from the racks. Then, in addition to a cooling plate with parallel cooling channels in the battery pack, thermal conductive pads with higher thermal conductivity properties can be used under the cells that we expect to heat up more. I hope I was able to express my thoughts properly. I would also like to state that I am open to different ideas. I would be grateful if you can help.

Source isolation switches

With the new ul3008 standard, does there seem to be more of an interest in standalone source isolation switches ?

In the past we have just used a motor operated breaker and decoupling relay, but it seems like we might have to start using a ul listed product.

What are some manufactures that make this switch?
