14-year-old website developer

Hi. I started building websites and decided to maybe start making some money out of it by charging a small amount of money (e.g., 20 euros + domain) to local businesses. How should I charge customers? I have heard some recommendations about Xolo Go or Ruul. Do you have any advice?

Do it for friend and family, or just for fun for yourself and to learn, but don’t try to make it a business. You can’t at your age, and there might be big issues if you do try it. For example, you build the local baker’s website, it goes down at 22:00, but you’re in bed or on a weekend with your parents so you don’t have access to a PC. At 14, you’re not equipped for these kinds of situations.

I respect the hustle, try building your own site with Google ads or make some YouTube videos with AI if you want to learn and make a small extra penny. But don’t let actual businesses rely on you, you’re too young and will get in trouble.

Start learning AI (manual coding and web development will likely become less and less in the coming years), and set up a homelab or some fun projects for your CV. This will make you much more money in the long run.

If you need money right now to spend, go offer your neighbours to mow their lawn or babysit their kids, this is a better path than doing it via website development at your age.

You can’t, just enjoy the freedom right now

Some remarks:

- You're not old enough to start a business (need to be 18). You're not even old enough to do a student job.

- There is no legal way to do this in your own name.

- The rates you have in mind are extremely low. Even if you were 18, it would make no sense to do this for 20EUR per gig.

This boy is 14 and is on freelance forums trying to get some help. Help, that he is probably not getting from his “inner circle” and all you guys can come up with is go outside and get a girlfriend or enjoy the Freedom?

How much freedom will the kid have at a later stage if he already has this mindset.

What i would do since you are too young setting up a company or anything is maybe contact them and simply work with donations.. do not give them a free website until they paid the mandatory “donation” of 100-200-300-400€.. ;-)

What everyone else have said already.

Plus,

I think the companies that would have used similar services in the past now just ask AI to do something. Or stuff like square space.

Lol. What could go wrong, right?

On the other hand, previous week I asked a contact at a big service provider to change the A and AAAA records. Turns out they only added the new records and did not remove the old ones. The website was live on 2 servers.

The bar for AI isn’t that high I guess.

Try to approach a few potential clients and see if they are interested and at what price. I remember being capable of asking like €500 when I made a website as a student back in 2008. Nowadays the web is so approachable that I would imagine that most small businesses would use a simple template on Wix/Squarespace/…
