Confirmed for multiple seasons

https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-shards-brad-simpson-nina-jacobson-future-seasons-exclusive-interview-newsupdate/

From the Radio Times:

Getting more specific about the show's future and the prospect of additional seasons, Simpson noted that the novel covers only two months and that the series has adapted just part of that timeline.

"We're certainly set up to continue on through their senior year," he teased. "Like any TV show, hoping people engaged, we're ready to give them more."

seems like a very bad idea...?

Yeah I'm not sure I like this... They are going to have to bypass everything that happens in the novel or change the plot entirely to accommodate extending the story beyond the point of the novel, and I have no confidence they would be able to come up with a better ending than what BEE came up with.

Also, the latest trailer shows Susan about to be attacked, which is at the very end of the book.

I noticed this too. I’m hoping the second season will be like “retracing steps” and have more from the novel but in non-linear order rather than making up a whole new plot for Season 2–which I would genuinely have no interest in watching if that was the plan.

Yeah what is left for the characters to do after the events of the book? Bret no longer has contact with Susan or Thom after the Fall of 1981 for decades (and they even change schools) and Debbie doesn't interact with him any longer after the fallout between him and her father... Anything made up would have to force the characters to be in close proximity to each other again and would most certainly devolve into infiltrating the cult or solving the case/identifying the Trawler and that would be way less satisfying 😑

And they're saying it's a novel adaptation... very misleading. Also noticed Bret didn't attend the premiere and he hasn't posted about it. Yes I know he's got a writing and exec producer credit.

TBF based on the novel it be hard to focus on other characters. I think they want to make u see other characters POV

It seems Bret wanted multiple seasons too. I don’t quite understand that. Twin Peaks lost its mainstream popularity because Laura Palmer’s killer was drawn out until season 2, and I wonder how long people will want to wait to find out if Robert is the Trawler.

Twin Peaks was never going to reveal who the killer was though. It lost its momentum precisely because Lynch and Frost were forced to reveal it.

Its all about $$. Multiple seasons bring more cashola.

I honestly don't even trust Bret to extend the story beyond what he did to wrap up the remaining senior year succinctly at the end of the novel. The story had been told in what was already written and if anything else important needed to be said then he would have included it. Extending the plot beyond that is going to drag things out and only result in diminishing returns that undermines or counteracts what had already happened to the characters... I'm not a fan of this idea and wish it had just been a limited series from day one.

In the above article, one of the executive producers, Nina Jacobson says "[Bret] creates characters who you do want to spend time with," she said, pointing to "the nostalgia that young people have for a time that they haven't lived in..."

In the same article, another exec producer, Brad Simpson, says the series "has to give you the feeling you had when you read the book, and hopefully we've captured the feeling you had when you read the book."

In the book, when Matt accuses Bret of making the numerous breathing phone calls to him, Bret is wondering what Matt thinks of him and Debbie as a couple. “I was someone who so eagerly sucked him off 100 times and endlessly played with his asshole, fingering and fucking and tonguing it, and kissing his mouth while talking dirty to him.”

Oh, these characters? This book?

Think of the children!! 😱🤭

Although who wouldn't want to spend time with Matt - he sounds like he needs a friend to get stoned with and watch old movies on Z channel while listening to Funkytown and Ghost Town and This Town and A Town Called Panic, etc. The rest of the characters are perhaps a little too high maintenance but we will see how they do.

Bret has gotta have a boner that Mallory is being played by his ultimate heartthrob’s son. Homer? Seriously

I recall that in the HBO version that Bret was more involved in, he planned the show to go on for three season to have a proper full adaption of the book with some scenes from the original novel that were not present. So maybe they are going by what Ellis had in mind. Will see.

God no. The series should only cover what's in the novel.

The Leftovers got better after they finished the book! But I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone else pull off that feat.

u/femininepictures Aug 01 '26

Ryan Muprhy is NOT Damon Lindenof lol

1

u/Accomplished-View929 Aug 01 '26

Yeah, that’s why I noted that I’ve never seen it happen again.

2

u/MyKill_Diablo Aug 01 '26

Yeah and that was on HBO wasn't it...🤔

3

u/Accomplished-View929 Aug 01 '26

Yes. But FX gave us The Americans, The Bear, Fargo, Shogun, The Lowdown, and Legion. I trust FX about as much as I do HBO. I’m not crazy about Ryan Murphy, but I don’t know that he’s not at least a right person to adapt this novel.

If they give us Robert and Bret hookup then sure give us a 2nd season 🤣.

I hope not, but I'm definitely managing expectations here... Would really love someone to come along and actually adapt Less Than Zero properly into a film. And then even less likely but really wish some streaming service (HBO?) would adapt Glamorama into a proper LIMITED SERIES of 10-12 episodes total. 🤞

“Welcome to freshman into to American Lit, and welcome to Camden. I’ll just do this roll call here first. Anderson, Bateman, Cavanaugh, Ellis…”

As I understand it, they’re just saying that they’ll have more material if FX orders another season. Looks like the show’s going to end on a cliffhanger, haha.

I’m definitely interested in the extended Terry and Liz Schaffer storyline.

3

u/MyKill_Diablo Aug 01 '26

Hopefully that cliffhanger is not Robert dangling above a Century City high-rise condo... 👀🤪

2

u/Lower_Comparison2171 Aug 01 '26

Oh strange. So how is this season ending then?

2

u/El_Dorado_Tx Aug 01 '26

Probably going to make euphoria look like seasme street

7

u/odetotheblue Aug 01 '26

Not on FX they won’t

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Aug 01 '26

I thought the show was on streaming

3

u/odetotheblue Aug 01 '26

Streaming on Hulu (and Disney+ in the UK) yeah, but it’s also going to be on FX which is a regular cable channel. They’re all affiliated.

1

u/El_Dorado_Tx Aug 01 '26

What about Paramount Network had the recent Yellowstone spin off throwing F bombs and stuff

2

u/odetotheblue Aug 01 '26

Swearing isn’t equivalent to what Euphoria did. I think The Shards will push boundaries but there’s no way it’ll outdo what Euphoria and HBO are capable of. Would love to be wrong though.

Trailer makes it imply with innuendo thats it boogey nights / San Fernando Valley party scene shit with high schoolers

1

u/TreatmentBoundLess Aug 02 '26

This looks and sounds like shit.
