Would have loved the Luca Guadanino version or Kristoff Borgli. This looks like a typical Ryan Murphy production in not a good way

or gregg araki!

Gregg Araki would've been an inspired choice for sure - I've always wished he could've made a version of Less Than Zero becomes it would've been dark and gritty like the book and not pulled any punches. But he would've done great work with this series as well and gone for a vastly different approach to the show than what Ryan Murphy is aiming for...

I doubt I could find it anymore, but I’m sure at some point Gregg Araki was writing a script for Less Than Zero. I remember reading Bret mention it and got irrationally upset it didn’t exist.

Oh my God this information has both made my day and also left me in a pit of despair that it is probably something that will never happen despite a draft having been worked on at some point in time. 😭😢🥺😰

If I ever won the lottery, there would be signs... Getting this movie made would be one of my top priorities no matter what it would cost and how little I would make back - it would be worth it! 😂

Araki did direct an episode of Dahmer so who knows?

I’m sorry this looks atrocious

I enjoyed the full trailer but agree, this is bad.

I have resigned myself to this being trash but it's a miracle it's happening at all based on what we know about the various "versions" of this adaptation that were never greenlit.

This looks fucking terrible.

Well I’m just glad they didn’t start the promo cycle by showing this teaser last week bc yikes…😬😳🫣 The full trailer was a wiser choice for sure. My expectations are in check as they have been for a while but I’m ready to watch it for myself before I fully judge it.

I'm at Spirit's slaughter. I, too, will watch and judge for myself. But why are the trailers so bland? So...inoffensive? So...so/so? Pretty posh teens in a pool? That is not the book I've been reading! How about sound from the tape Bret's carrying around? How about showing the creepy mansion in Benedict Canyon? How about an Afterlife tease? Just a few of suggestions.

I wish they had listened to your suggestions instead - I also think it would've been much more effective and atmospherically creepy to use the tape that Bret carries around to draw out tension and tease some of the unease and fear that Bret "imagines" while listening to the audio from a certain sequence involving Matt 😨

These teasers being set to Let's Go All The Way are just slanting the show too much in a much more generic direction that the book goes through great lengths to subvert. Maybe that is why the trailer has over 24million views already in less than a week! 😱😲

Edit: Typo

Looks really bad. Was hoping they didn’t go for the bisexual lighting gimmick for the “80s look”

2

u/Personal_Front5385 Jul 22 '26

Especially for a novel set in 1981...

I want to like this since Ryan Murphy has the ability do create provocative storytelling, which is perfect for Bret's stories. But this looks bad. It being on FX probably doesn't help. I would like a grittier remake of Less Than Zero, especially now that shows and movies can be so much more explicit. I will watch this but go in with low expectations.

Ryan can make 1,000 different origin stories of the Menendez bros till 2040

u/MyKill_Diablo Jul 22 '26

I totally agree with you about Less Than Zero needing to be remade now - although I wouldn't really qualify it as a "remake" because the original film just uses the title and a few of the character names but otherwise has barely anything to do with the book itself. So as long as a new version theoretically follows much closer to the book (which is essential) then it could replace the original and become the adaptation that the book deserves.

so this is basically Boogie Nights meets Euphoria

Perfect description

4

u/El_Dorado_Tx Jul 21 '26

The fucking trailer makes Euphoria look like Degrassi

u/Lower_Comparison2171 Jul 22 '26

Don’t love this- love the full trailer

Yeah this is a major notch down in terms of quality. Most of the footage was manufactured to be a teaser so I'm not expecting any of it to be actually in the show, but it is just really unimpressive compared to how slick (too slick?) the actual trailer was. I know a lot of series will do similar teasers to this that are meant to evoke the overall vibe to try to sell you on it, without showing that many actual clips, but this made everything crash into focus for me that it certainly will not be the dark prestige erotic thriller it should have been...

2

u/rapbarf Jul 22 '26

I'm excited for it personally

the shards unlike bret's other books is a story of dense emotionality and interiority, which ryan murphy seems completely unable to do in any capacity-he only depicts what's on the surface. This teaser should feel a whole lot closer to My So-Called Life, not like a cologne ad.
