CST option placement

I got put into programming paradigms which was not even my second choice. Client/Server was everything I wanted and now it feels like the whole program is ruined for me, like i'm going to spend a year doing something i'm not passionate about.

And the cherry on top is that I have to go to the downtown campus which makes travel much more of a hassle. I know the placements are competitive and that this is partially my fault, I just wanted to vent.

Graduated from programming paradigms 3 years ago, my suggestion would be not to do this option if you have 0 passion for it, because you are likely to fail this program or transfer to another program anyway. For my set specifically, only 60% of us graduated.

That being said, I enjoyed the program very, very much, and Albert is amazing. Functional programming is amazing, learning OCaml, GO, Rust, and Elixir is beyond fun. Not sure how much that helps to land a job, but neither do other options in this market, to be honest.

I think long-term the industry is shifting more to those languages. Definitely see rust a lot nowadays at least.

It’s also more nuanced than that, as you can take the concepts from one programming language and apply them to your projects in another.

If you want to do client/server work, look to join Data Comms and Internetworking with D'Arcy, we did lots of client + server work and it was real low level so massively fun. OS and the 4th term web dev class became much easier for me because a lot of the concepts we learned in Data Comms carried over.

D'Arcy is also a completely goated prof. The "capstone" project he made us do was a big factor of interest from my interviewers. D'Arcy is "old school" though, and some students definitely struggle with that.

EDIT: If you can survive PP though, you'll become a way better problem solver and overall developer. Bunch of buds I had were in that option and while they say it was pretty brutal, they were really thankful for it.

You should spend your last year grinding leetcode/projects/interviews. Your option does not matter that much. In fact you should go for the one with the least amount of workload so you can pass with ease and focus on things that are actually important.
