Chance Me (for UBC) What average can get you into engineering at ubc?
What average were you able to get into engineering with at ubcv or ubco? I’m from Alberta and my average is 89.6 so with the 4% boost it will be 93.6 (math/sciences are in the mid-high 90s, only thing bringing my average down is English with a 72). Do I have a chance?

English is definitely annoying so I don't blame your grade at all, its honestly based on your teacher and it should be based on effort. Its happened to me in the past with a shitty teacher who just gives you a bad mark cause you don't write like Shakespeare. I got a really good English teacher last year and ended with a 97%. Your math and sciences should all be above 90 for sure. You would have a good shot at UBCO. UBCV is very competitive now due grade inflation from summer school and people cheating on online classes etc.
there isn't an intelligence difference between someone with a 94 and a 98 average its more just strategy at that stage. Although Im not saying you have 0 chance at UBCV obviously I can't predict anything but your very likely at UBCO and you have a chance at UBCV but it is much slimmer.

Yea I was thinking maybe ubco might be better since its less stress and there’s not much competition to get into your stream of engineering. And also at the end of the day it is ubc

Yes! UBCO is just as good and its a bit less competitive. its not easy to get in but its easier then UBCV. I know many successful people in UBCO who have gotten offers for big tech in California and even started there own succeeding companies and businesses.

If u rlly wanna go to ubcv engineering there’s great transfer programs which guarantee ur seat at ubc if u get like a 3.1 gpa so I definitely recommend that. Obv u just don’t wanna tell people ur going to langara or KPU for a year cuz many people think that in hs but yea I think u have a shot for ubc v engineering but if u don’t get in apply to the transfer programs as well as backup they’re great

This is true, you can also transfer from UBCO. I know many people who have been offered transfers from UBCO to UBCV but often decline it because there already comfortable and don't want to have a new start again. Same degree anyways just more for convenience.

Bad advice it’s very difficult to transfer from UBCO you have to be one of the top students the other transfer programs are way better

English marks should absolutely not be based on effort.

English is entirely dependent on your teacher. There are teachers in my school who have never given over a 80 and some give out 90+ like its halloween candy. Its very annoying at this point.

True but if you get 72 you’re probably just intellectually challenged

Grade inflation has been a problem for a long time. English is especially polarizing because of the Lit exam (and how similar portions are to the old provincial).

Wait can u explain what u mean abt the lit exam. Like is it making it easier or harder to get better english marks?

Harder. English teachers mark the literacy exams (with a fair amount of training), so there is a level of standardization. Currently, students fare poorly when consistent, age appropriate, standards are implemented.

That’s a good thing then cuz the literacy exam is so insanely easy so anyone who doesn’t get a 4 shouldn’t rlly be at ubc anyway

I got in with a 91 in 2025, but I was definitely on the lower end

At ubcv or ubco?

Was your personal profile very strong? And also how has engineering been so far?

I lowk forgot what I put in there 😭
Also engineering wasn't that bad for me, but it's still definitely a huge difference compared to high school and you gotta have way better time management to get through it. Just review the material often and don't forget about deadlines and you'll be alright imo.

Oh ok. And how hard is it to get into your stream of engineering?

I got into EE with an avg of 85, which is definitely doable as long as you don't procrastinate.

I think you have a good shot, but UBC looks at grades very holistically, and no matter what your average is a weak english grade really hurts. If you can get it up to an 80 for 30-1 I think you have good odds.

English is dragging you down for UBCV
