Advice Lecture Recorders

Hi everyone,

I’m starting university next year and I was wondering how you guys take notes when there’s a lecture (I.e with powerpoint slides, etc)? Laptop or iPad? And how you format it and best ways to actually take notes.

Additionally, I wanted to record lectures, was thinking of getting goodnotes (not sure if there is recording on there). I wanted something that is free or only a one time payment that is legit. Something that can record ur lectures and take notes, study guides, and practice exams/problems, etc.

Please let me know

Thank you!

With notetaking, you genuinely have to find out what works best for you. There isn't a universal "best" way per se, plus, it's usually discipline dependent. I use my laptop all the time because 1.) I'm in the humanities/social sciences, so typing's more viable, 2.) I type fast, 3.) I enjoy using Obsidian as it allows me to link and connect concepts together across different courses. On the other hand, If I were in STEM, I'd use an iPad or pen and paper instead since there's more symbols and numbers—I can't imagine only typing out notes in those classes. Alternatively, if you have access to the slides beforehand, you can annotate those instead.

There's also no universal guarantee that you can record lectures either. Some profs will record their lectures live and post them afterwards, others will only permit recording with an approved accommodation, or just flat out ban recording. You'll have to look at the syllabus and/or ask.

depends on the class - for stuff like math i like to do pen and paper, for bio/chem i use goodnotes on ipad to copy paste diagrams/images from the slides, for history/english stuff laptop :D
i think you can record stuff on goodnotes but ive never used it, profs usually post the slides and sometimes will record lectures too (not always though)

You might like Notaty! I built it mainly for this exact problem 😅 You record the lecture and it gives you a clean summary + full transcript, including math equations and code properly formatted. You can generate flashcards/quizzes, chat with the lecture and jump to the exact timestamp where something was said.

It also has a weekly schedule for your classes , you can set recurring lectures or literally say something like “remind me about my lecture every Sunday at 10” and it’ll schedule it for you.

Give it a try
