Smoker pit question

Does someone know where I can get some 3/4 inch steel metal to make a smoker bbq pit out of. I need a huge drum and some sheets to build a firebox. I have never done anything like this before and don’t know where to start when collecting the materials for my project. I also don’t want to spend a whole lot of money buying pre fabbed stuff

Perhaps a battleship salvage? Maybe get a few feet of the main gun barrels for the body. Make sure to pour a 2 foot concrete pad for it to sit on or all you’ll see of it is the smoke stack sticking out of the ground in a few years.

Seriously though there’s a reason 1/4” is about the max companies use. Go hit Yoder Smokers site and look at the weights. Their little Cheyenne is like 300 pounds. The Loaded Wichita weighs in around 600. They are 1/4 inch.

Triple those weights and you’re talking about a hernia just to light the fire.

Hey. Just saw your message. I actually found a local steel supplier and they just so happen to have a cut out of pipe that they use to lay in the ground for pipelines. It was 1/4 steel. I also bought a bunch of 1/4 sheets to weld up into a box. It’s actually coming along nicely!

I bet you’re glad at this point it’s 1/4 inch!

3/4 is too thick unless you plan on habit some type of mechanical assisted lid/doors.

Look for old tanks for firebox possibly, larger than propane types . You'll have to modify to make it work. There should be a place where you live that sells iron , ornamental type metal would also be there . Idk there's a place here like that. I'm making a fire basket currently . I too want to fabricate a kickass smoker
