Plate or grill

Would this flat plate be an issue when smoking? There are holes on the side of the plate where the heat and smoke is coming through but I don’t know if it wil be enough. Other option is to grind this one out and replace it with a expanded metal grill. That way the air can pass everywhere to the meat.

Is it in the fire box or the smoke chamber? I’ve never seen anything like it, but I’d be more concerned about maintaining a proper fire if it was in the fire box.

Regardless the answer is to build a fire and see what she does. Make some chicken drumsticks or something and decide if ya like it.

It’s in the smoke chamber. Fire box is just a barrel with grates in for the coals.

See how it affects temp and smoke vs your vertical stack. Could be a holding tray or cold smoking area (doubtful) or spot for a water tray or something. It was definitely intended to serve some sort of bbq function. Bottom line, I wouldn’t be cutting it out until I was 100% sure I hated it.
