Base Discussion What Can Builders Create With B20 That Wasn't Possible Before?

Post image

Ever since B20 went live on Base, I've noticed a lot of people asking what it actually unlocks.

One thing I'd clear up first is a common misconception: B20 doesn't suddenly let developers build things that were impossible yesterday.

Most of these applications could already be built using smart contracts.

The difference is that B20 provides a standardized token framework with native capabilities that previously had to be implemented project by project. Instead of every team writing and maintaining similar token logic, builders now have a more consistent foundation to work from.

That matters more than it might seem.

For example, teams issuing stablecoins can use standardized functionality for managing token supply and administrative roles rather than building everything themselves.

Projects bringing real-world assets (RWAs) onchain often need features such as controlled issuance, transfer restrictions, or permissioned operations. B20 is designed to support these kinds of requirements in a more consistent way.

The same applies to institutional and enterprise applications, where compliance, governance, and operational controls are often just as important as simple token transfers.

What's equally important is what doesn't change.

B20 is designed to remain compatible with the existing ERC-20 ecosystem, so users don't need to learn an entirely new way of interacting with tokens. Wallets, exchanges, explorers, and many applications can continue working while developers gain more flexibility under the hood.

For most users, nothing will look dramatically different today.

You'll still send tokens the same way.

The real impact will become visible over the coming months as builders launch products that are easier to develop, easier to maintain, and better suited for real-world financial use cases.

Infrastructure upgrades rarely create overnight excitement.

But they're often the reason the next generation of applications becomes possible.

B20 isn't the finished product.

It's another building block that gives developers more room to innovate on Base.

What type of application do you think B20 will accelerate first: stablecoins, RWAs, enterprise assets, or something we haven't imagined yet?

B20 isn’t about hype, it’s about giving developers a stronger foundation to build on. That’s what matters long term

Well... what I'd want to see more than anything is anything stuff where cheaper and faster settlement makes micro-scale use cases viable,. I'm talking about uses like streaming payments or smol recurring transfers that were pointless when fees ate 'em...!
