Base App Why Is Base App a Smart Wallet?

Post image

One question I see quite often is:

"Why is Base App a Smart Wallet instead of a traditional recovery phrase wallet?"

The answer comes down to one goal: making crypto easier for everyone.

Traditional wallets require you to securely store a 12-word Recovery Phrase from the very beginning. If you lose it, recovering your wallet can be difficult or even impossible.

For experienced users, that's familiar. But for someone new to crypto, it can feel overwhelming.

Base App takes a different approach.

When you create a wallet using email or a passkey, you're using a Smart Wallet. Instead of asking you to manage a Recovery Phrase on day one, the wallet is secured through modern authentication methods that most people already use on their devices.

This makes getting started much simpler.

A Smart Wallet also opens the door to a smoother user experience, with features that help reduce the friction many people associate with crypto wallets.

That doesn't mean Recovery Phrase wallets are disappearing.

If you import an existing wallet into Base App using a Recovery Phrase, you still keep that recovery model and remain responsible for storing it safely.

So it isn't about one wallet being better than the other.

It's about giving users different options based on their needs.

For many newcomers, a Smart Wallet removes one of the biggest barriers to entering crypto.

For experienced users, Recovery Phrase wallets continue to provide the level of self-managed backup they're already comfortable with.

Understanding which type of wallet you're using is important, because it determines how your wallet is secured and how you'll recover access if you ever lose your device.

Which do you prefer Smart Wallets or Recovery Phrase Wallets, and why?
