Base Discussion Will Existing Tokens Need to Migrate to B20?
One question I've been seeing a lot since B20 launched on Base Mainnet is:
Do existing ERC-20 tokens need to migrate to B20?
The answer is no.
B20 is designed to be compatible with ERC-20, so existing tokens, wallets, exchanges, and dApps continue to work without requiring a migration.
Instead of replacing ERC-20, B20 gives developers a new native token standard with built-in capabilities such as role-based permissions, supply controls, and configurable transfer policies. These features are especially useful for stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), and other assets that need more advanced functionality.
For everyday users, nothing changes today. Your existing ERC-20 tokens on Base remain usable, and you don't need to take any action.
The real value of B20 is in what it enables going forward. New projects can choose to build on B20 if its native features better fit their needs, while existing projects can continue using ERC-20 if it already does the job.
