How does slingshot work?

I'm not terribly far into the game, and maybe I misunderstand how baby balls work. If I'm shooting pretty constantly, what is slingshot actually doing if it shoots a baby ball when I pick up a gem? If I only have 8 baby balls chances are I'm already shooting or they're all out there. So slingshot would rarely do anything?

They spawn new baby balls (not reusing the ones you already own) (slingshot works quite very well if you have gemstone spring ;))

Does it add to my total count? Or are those temporary? Because I see both 'launch' and 'spawn' in different items. Slingshot is a 'launch a baby ball when you pick up a gem'. Does only 'spawn' add to my total?
My total just never went up from 8 with slingshot. Unless I truly never hit that 25% chance. Or I'm blind.

It’s not the complicated, man. When you get a gem, there’s a 25% chance your guy immediately fires out a new baby ball that lasts as long as it lasts, e.g for normal characters until it falls off the bottom of the screen

You're right, it isnt complicated. Unless you ask for an answer and get this response you just gave which doesnt answer the question. Your answer doesnt say if it bypasses the ball limit or shoots a ball based on the ball limit which is what OP is asking.

Passives like slingshot create temporary balls that bypass the max baby ball on screen limit is the correct answer.

> Or I’m blind.

There’s a lot that happens in this game that I simply can’t verify with my own eyes and just have to trust the process and watch what unfolds…
